Duck, you made some awesome suggestions! I especially like the guest Q&A idea. That would be LOTS of fun! Historians, city officials, professors, business owners--that's just a great idea. Advertised properly, that could win/win/win for MT, the paper, and the subject matter expert's entity.

I've noticed that the MEN does the update snippet stuff on facebook, but does zip for MT in that regard. I think their eggs are in the facebook/twitter basket there.

Comments on obituaries are tricky. At first I was ticked that I couldn't comment on the monroenews website for people I knew to pass along condolences, but after I thought about it, better to not leave that open to the general public. What happens when some lout comes on and trashes a deceased person (only a matter of time) and the family has to endure the public comments? I understand what you mean about seniors, and it's too bad we have to worry about the louts ruining for everyone, but it would absolutely happen.

I really hope the idea of guest posters at least gets a few tries to see if it draws. So far, that's the best idea I've seen.

And I think about that Raptor pilot fairly often (usually when I hear a helicopter) and wonder how he's doing. He sure was shaken up after that little boy drowned. He has a tough job. Hope he's faring well.

To be honest, I think of the pilot a lot too.   I remember he invited some to go talk in person at the airport and I really wanted to go.  I would very much like to talk with him and thank him in person.

As far as bad comments, that is an easy one.  All new posters have a time period that all posts get cleared.  They do that now for violations, so nothing new.  So someone can't just make an account to hurt.  And if a frequent poster does it, bam, they knew better, bye bye.

Oh, wouldn't a historian do good.

Really?   Did you feel targeted?

What was the name of this thread again?

ugh.  :-\

Yep, I talk a lot and have been discussing the topic and now you too are clogging it up with your name.  Hmmmm.

See, repeated names doesn't mean it is a negative as you say it is.

Oh, a master gardener or something like that...  I would so love to ask a pro questions and hear other people's answers.

Yep, and a good one would be Ralph Naveaux. He has been part of the Museum and Battlefield for years and is a wealth of knowledge. (And he was my French teacher in high school!) I'd love to participate and read a Q&A session with him!

I am thinking that someone from the paper popping in and making a post saying that they are listening would be good right now.

A second is that they should talk with some forum members about what ideas they want to try so it can get some bugs out before it happens.  Preferred is right here... hey, maybe the first scheduled question period.

OK, maybe I can explain myself a little more slowly and clearly.

My suggestion is not to interfere with your posting.

My suggestion was to keep the "Recent Posts" in their specific category.

And (now watch) YES, I am posting to this thread that is repeating itself on the "Recent Posts" page, which is taking over the page and exactly what Im saying.

WHERE do you interpret that I'm saying I'm better than you?  ? ? ? ? ? ? ?  8*

But you seem to want to make this some sort of fight.   Sorry, no fight here.

Again . . . . what is the name of this thread?

I think there would almost have to be a starter list of questions to keep things moving along, with additional questions fielded from MT'ers.

Master Gardener? *swoon* Yes, please! Incidentally, did you know that Monroe County no longer has an MG on staff? All questions are routed to Lansing. I put a call in weeks ago and got no reply.  :(

Maybe for the scheduled ones there can be a up front announced moderator that doesn’t participate but tells people to behave so the admin, who will have to be watching can do some instant clobbering.  If a guest takes the time to talk, then they should be treated with respect.  Maybe zero or almost zero tolerance for antics and a temp ban of anyone until the question time is over.

Oh, and guest topic locks ON TIME.

Yes, that is the two potential problems.  Not anyone asking questions, and too many questions all at once.

I agree that a more effective moderation would be a welcome thing.  It is comments like that that I am growing very tired of.  One doesn’t need to read more than a couple of posts to see a post intending to inflame or be a personal attack rather than a debate about the topic.   Debates get heated, and that is fine, but why do so many feel that insulting people personally is in any way constructive or continues the topic debate.  I am not meaning to pick on Flanders alone, there are very many that do it, and some that seem to make it primary.

If you think my comment was somehow incendiary towards LF, so much as to use me as an "example" in your winded response, then I suggest MT have a geriatric thread where all forms of humor are banned so as not to rile up the old folk by confusing them with humor before 8pm bedtime.

I seem to recall a discussion like this before?
A Chatbox or Shoutbox (as someone already suggested)
Live Video Chat
My personal thought on this, able to upload pictures into threads and gallery from your hard-drive instead of first having to upload on Flicker, Photobucket or whatever site used.

More guests...  All high school football coaches at different times.  The person in charge of the Monroe County Fair Parade when they announce what the theme is.  Talk of what they do and stuff.  Maybe a fair board person near fair time, or maybe better after so can take suggestions and find what they plan for next year.

OMG YES!  I so hate not posting pictures direct.

Yeah, it was a flop, mostly because the software was crap, servers not good enough.  A disaster.  But, if it was just the forum....

Yeah, actually I did.  If it was meant as humor (as you just said) then I apologize for not comprehending that.
