Outdoors: Indiana DNR won't believe black bear sighting
« on: May 13, 2012, 08:21:00 AM »

Bob Haskin said he was excited when he made a call to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources on April 20 to report his sighting of a black bear in Northwest Indiana.

The person taking the call wasn't as excited, according to Haskin.

"He said, 'There are no black bears in Indiana.' I told him that I know a black bear when I see one and that it definitely was a black bear," Haskin said in a recent phone interview.

Bear or no bear? Doesn't seem that odd.

Here's a picture of a Michigan black bear near Greenville, MI.  Google maps says it's 210 road miles from Greenville down to Roselawn, IN.  Probably 180 "as the bear walks" :o :o :o  I wouldn't be completely surprised to see a bear right here in our area 8* 8* 8*

Black bears have been sighted and confirmed in Dexter and Manchester in Lenawee County in recent years.  And the link below is about a bear in Lucas County in Ohio in 2005.  That one may have also been in Hillsdale County.  There is no reason that a bear couldn't be in Indiana.  Shoot, a few years ago a tagged wolf from Wisconsin was found dead at the Indiana/Ohio border.  That wolf went all the way around Chicago.

Wolves can run 100 miles without stopping! I wouldn't be surprised if there are black bears around. I hope I don't meet one hiking. I try to walk loudly lol.
