The Breweries in Monroe: Roeder, Wahl, others?
« on: May 13, 2012, 09:57:12 AM »

I wish I would have been around a hundred and ten years ago so I could have studied this topic more "in depth" ;) ;) ;)

Here's some info on the Roeder Brewery fire.  The Roeder brewery was located about where the new American Legion Post is now at Jones and Laplaisance.  A side note:  Jones didn't go through all the way to Laplaisance until the last 40-50 years or so....

I'm thinking the brewery itself may have actually been out in what is now the old France stone quarry or Lake France (I see is as Lake Monroe on some maps).

The gentleman that writes one of these blogs has posted here on MT about the brewery and the fire...   I'll dig it out and link it...  maybe on the anniversary of the fire.

This photo is from the MCCC website.  It shows the Wahl Brewery in 1883.

These photos after the fire are from the Library website:

I can't post them here but you can zoom right in on some of the detail.  Easy to see from one photo that the property backed up to the River Raisin.

These are my best guesses at where the Wahl Brewery (A) and the Roeder Brewery (B) were located.  Interesting thought...  which water would have made better beer...   Plum Creek or the River Raisin.  Apparently storing ice was part of both businesses and it sounds like Wahl also sold ice.  I suppose the river would have made for a larger ice supply.

Here's more info on the Wahl Brewery.

Very interesting drawing of the brewery.  I have a copy of the original plat showing the location.  I'll have to get it scanned and posted.

I had heard there was also a brewery in what is now Soldiers and Sailor's park and here is more info on it: Monroe City Brewery.  If this article is correct it was at the intersection of Front and Wadsworth along the river.  There are still some old buildings there...

I've added this location to my map but left it zoomed in on the location:

I believe one of the buildings still there used to be a bottling plant, still in operation when I was a kid.  Probably associated with the brewery.

There is a horse drawn Ice cutter at the fairgrounds by the log cabin, and to keep the ice, they packed it in sawdust.

This is related to the breweries in Monroe since they were put out of business by Prohibition...

this is about the ending of the prohibition era:

Thanks for the info Fishbulb...   I wondered what was going on when I found the two similar articles...  it wasn't an intentional slight on my part.  The other one was the one that was open when I went back to grab and paste it.  I will change the link now since I would much rather have info from one of our own.  Please don't hesitate to share more info!!!

I have heard that "plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery"...   and you know just how easy it is to just "cut and paste" something here on the internet :( :( :(

Talk about "stumbling onto" information while looking for something else...

We were at Veteran's Park over the weekend...  on the back of the WWII monument is a list of the donors for the memorial site...  one of the donors was Diekman Bottling Works...

I'm thinking that this is very likely the same company Professor H...

they were also a Stroh's Beer Distributor in Monroe at some time...

some info I found Googling...   along with some collectibles on Ebay and other sites...

This is from the Ludington MI newspaper of all places...   I'd like to see what the MEN had to say about it at the time but apparently their papers have not yet been scanned by Google...

I noticed the date on the article is May 18, 1933. That was a week after the state amended the Volstead Act making the selling and manufacturing of beer legal for the first time in 15 years. I would love to know the odds of an unlicensed beer truck hitting a licensed one. Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

What a surprise to even myself, as I don't drink beer, but I am finding this to be a very interesting lesson.  I read Kevin's blog and Brian's informative comment, too.  Very fascinating history lesson!
