Nice article, this was how I was raised and that is why I've never even considered doing drugs. One thing I will point out though, my generation wasn't the generation that started the drug era in America. That falls on the shoulders of those children from the 60's.
I'm not sure it fell squarely on our shoulders ussoccer26 (I graduated high school in 1967 so I guess I fall pretty squarely into that group)... but what did happen in the 60's is it came out in the open in music mainly... the drug culture was no longer a secret... and it became popular!!!
Might have had a lot to do with all the political talk of the cold war and how we were only hours or perhaps even minutes away from global obliteration from possible nuclear attack at any moment...
I'm sure there were a lot of other factors but I see that as a big one...
the "don't worry, be happy" syndrome is what I call it

I'm sure there was marijuana in our high school (we were a consolidated rural district similar to some of the smaller districts in Monroe County) but I never was exposed to it until I was in the Army...
and that was in Germany where the GIs could by hashish on the street corner...
we were supposed to be "combat ready" and prepared to mount a counter strike within an hour...
yeah, right
