Monroe's Civil War Veterans
« on: May 25, 2012, 10:54:44 AM »

Since the new monument memorial will be dedicated this weekend... I was wondering if anyone had any ancestors that fought in the war and their name is now on the monument.

Looks like its going to be a big event. I "plan" to be there to take pictures.

One thing I wanted to mention since it did not make it into the newspaper (not interesting enough I guess?) is that the website/blog I was asked to create for Monroe County's Civil War Sesquicentennial event's and Civil War information will be in the National Archives. Here is the details... http://mcmcws.wordpress.com/2012/05/25/this-site-national-archives-bound/

Thank you and I hope to be able to post your family's past, at the present for the future.

We did make it to the dedication ceremony.  I shot some video but haven't had time to do anything with it yet.  I did get the cannon when they fired it ;) ;) ;)

Here's the video Paula from the MEN shot...

I'm pretty certain they're all dead.

Thanks for the shout-out BRD!

MPACT also filmed and will have a longer video produced for cable access, but that schedule is TBA. Bryan also took a lot of pictures and we posted David Ingall's speech on monroenews.com.

I think Fuzz might have some plans for that cannon involving cats and his neighbors across the river from him.

I think Fuzz might be gone from the site for a while after he sees this game. I'm sure it will provide him many hours of enjoyment.

This is the highest resolution I could find for the photos Bryan Bosch from the MEN took at the ceremony:

I didn't get ceremony because I had to leave. So if anyone has pictures that they would like to share, please send them.

I really like this one of the caisson...

It looks like you must have left just about the time we got there...

we both were there when they shot the cannon...

unless they shot it earlier...   way before the ceremony started.

My camera battery is dying so I saved it for photos of the monuments themselves once they were unwrapped.

I do have quite a bit of video I took of just random parts of the ceremony.

You're welcome to any or all of my photos or video if you want to use it.

Yeah I was there before 10:00 am for the reading of the names. They first shot the cannon off around 12:30. The angle of the cannon was pointed across where a woman was watering her garden and when the cannon went off she dropped the hose and shot straight up in the air. I wish I had my video camera on that one. lol

I have received and posted he first of the CIVIL WAR stories. It is about two brothers from Monroe, Michigan in the Civil War. Thomas W. Goodenough and George W. Brown who served together in the 7th Michigan Infantry.  Included is an excerpt from the diary of one brother describing his thoughts while serving picket duty during the winter of 1862, providing a living glimpse of the past.

Each submission will have its own individual Post as well as added to the CIVIL WAR STORIES Page.
