North Towne Mall getting closer to the wrecking ball
« on: June 01, 2012, 08:51:45 AM »

This was one of my favorite 'haunts' when we first moved to this area...   I was working in Toledo so it was natural I guess...  once it's gone I guess we can move this to the history thread...

I know it's not really in Monroe County although it is in the "Toledo Strip" that used to be part of the county.

Anyone remember the airplane landing field that was there before the mall was built?

Closed North Towne square mall in Toledo Ohio is now a ghost town

I remember the airport, but I left Monroe in the late 70's.

The deadmalls.com article said the mall opened in 1980 so they probably were planning and building on it in '79...

interesting that it was the last mall built and first mall closed when they closed it...

mis-management or location?

I shopped there a few times after it opened.
My wife liked me to take her to Timko's.

I looked at the flickr gallery and, oh....... the memories. I spent a large part of my teen years at that mall. Wonder how many movies I saw there? It's heartbreaking to see the storefronts I so vividly remember in such ruins. I even spotted the Spencer's entry. I remember my friends and I giggling and learning a whole lot in that store! lol Very educational decks of cards and adult themed gag gifts! I remember many of us staying so late in the mall that the gates were pulled down on the shops and were were bummed we had to leave. Loved that mall.

Interesting to see the ivy growing wild in the planter in front of the old CVS store. Cool pics.

Lots of people shopped there but the location wasn't the greatest.  It was by far better than going to what is now Westfield Mall on Tallmadge.  Obviously stores didn't make "enough" money to satisfy investors so they eventually all closed up.  Wall street investors drop anything in a heartbeat for the next big money maker.  Nobody is satisfied with just making a living.

I still think it would make a great place for a movie scene like from the Blues Brothers... Driving through the mall chased by the cops.
Or another Die Hard movie and the mall gets blown up or Mall Cop 2.
