Kroger launches new focus on Michigan made products
« on: June 08, 2012, 10:10:31 AM »

Kroger may have a national influence (they're the largest grocery chain and actually the #2 retailer in the US) but they are committed to providing their Michigan shoppers with locally grown products:

This looks like the first of the "Pure Michigan" ads they're talking about:

If it's not organic, it is not pure! I am semi-pleased with Kroger's organic selection, they even carry their own line. They need more organic meat.

I will convey that to my wife...   she is looking for just that kind of customer comments.

I didn't notice the origin but the Sunkist oranges from Kroger were nasty. (Although admittedly they couldn't be part of the Michigan made campaign)
Most were dried out...very little juice...and one had black in the center when we sliced it.
My wife says we'll have to start buying our fruit at Meijer again....but I seem to recall lots of negative comments about the produce at Meijer...does anyone have any suggestions?

Return whatever oranges you still have and Kroger will refund your purchase.

I'm not sure where Sunkist oranges are grown but when we're in Florida at Christmas they're busy then picking oranges...   so if they're Florida oranges they've been stored "a long time".

My wife went to Ida and picked strawberries at Whittaker's U pick berries this week...

you can't get berries any better than that ;) ;) ;)

Kroger has been good with any returns I have had to make.
Note on strawberries:
Due to the seeds, the strawberries can retain more pesticides than other fruits. Make sure to wash them thoroughly.

Not having a Kroger here, I do appreciate Bush's Michigan product line.

I've been picking up some pretty good produce on Saturday mornings at The Farmer Market behind Big Boy.  If I need something any other day of the week, I generally go to Ciolino's near the Big Lots store on Telegraph.

Thanks. I didn't know where they moved to and I thought about visiting that market as well....but I recall their website indicated the produce in season for each month....it seems the best months already passed....guess I'll have to check it out first hand.

Thanks. The crop harvest calender for Michigan was interesting. I'm just glad the corn on the cob my wife brought home tonight tasted great. The chart says they're not in-season until August. Bought 'em at Kroger but maybe they're not from Michigan.

Tossed every orange that made it my way out of that batch....but I still tried 'em in case I just got a bad one. Not sure where they all went...but they're gone now.
The strawberries sound good...thanks.

My wife brought home some of that corn on the cob yesterday and we had it for dinner last night.  Now it still doesn't compare to Smith's in Erie or the place along the river in Dundee...

but it was probably the best "store bought" corn I've ever had.  No idea where it was grown but I'm pretty sure it wasn't in Michigan...   I see some field corn that is knee high already though (old tradition was you'd have a good crop of corn if your plants were knee high by the 4th of July)!!!

The worst part of the corn is my blood sugar was still at 138 this morning (should be below 130 in the morning) 8* 8* 8*  I guess that's why they call it "sweet" corn ;) ;) ;)
