Home PC Repair Needed
« on: June 29, 2012, 12:55:18 AM »

I need someone who is willing to come to my home, that people can vouch for their integrity of their work, and who doesn't charge a whole lot.

I did have a PC repair guy for years. He charged 40$ per visit, not by hour. A few months ago my repair guy came to my home, like always to repair my computer. He ended up taking my computer to repair the motherboard at his home, along with 175$ cash. Since then, he has disappeared and will not return any of my calls.

I have a Windows 7 gaming computer.
When I turn it on, there is (depending on who you ask) beep(s) that come from the computer and the screen stays blank and does not boot up.
I am looking for someone who can come repair my computer in my home.
BTW, this is a computer that I bought off of craigslist, NOT the computer that bum stole from me LOL.

Thanks for any help.

Depending on the type of motherboard, and the number of beeps, it could be one of several different problems.

The three most likely are, bad motherboard, bad or loose ram, or bad or loose video card.

I highly doubt that anyone would be able to diagnose and fix the problem at your home, unless they have a computer repair shop on wheels.

Try and figure out what brand the mother board is, it may be printed on the board, again depending on the manufacturer of the board, and how many beeps there are, and whether they are fast or slow, or if it just continues to beep in different tones.

I'd do it myself, but I live in Jackson now. You might try Ducksoup.

Thank you for the reply :)
This is everything my system came with, that I am aware of.

Intel Q9300 Core 2 Quad Quad-Core Processor @ 2.5Ghz
Nvidia nForce 750i SLI FTW Motherboard
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT Gfx Card w/ 512mb Video Ram
5GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 Ram
Creative Soundblaster X-fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional Sound Card
WD Caviar 320GB 7,200RPM Hard Drive
WD Caviar 1TB 7,200RPM Hard Drive
Antec NeoPower 550W PSU
AC Freezer 7 Pro Heatsink Fan
Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Case w/ four 120mm fans and one 140mm fan.

I am aware of someone in Monroe that does house calls, btw.
But their prices are just a little too high for me at 40$ an hour, minimum of two hours.

Next to Happys pizza on Telegraph is a place you can take your base unit to get a diagnosis  you don't need to take the monitor or other stuff.

Any more repairs can add up to a new system quickly.

$40/hour for professional on-site IT service sounds like a great deal to me.  Given what salaries for competent IT professionals are, anyone willing do do it at that price isn't making much, if anything, after paying salary, benefits, overhead, etc if they are using well trained people.  And 2 hours minimum sounds perfectly reasonable considering prep and travel time.

If you want to pay cheap prices, you'll either need someone working on the side, with no guarantees, or you'll get cheap service with a worthless guarantee.

ktreas, I have never heard of $40 for someone to come to the house and check out a computer.    I have to agree with ytrewq.   I think you'd have to find someone who does such work "on the side" and you'd be taking your chances it got fixed.

Sorry, but I don't know a good computer repair service.

Why not just take it in someplace?  It's not like a washing machine or garage door opener.  You can unhook the thing in 30 seconds and be on your way to a repair shop.

Sounds like a pretty nice system.

Here is a site that will help you out to determine what the problem is.

And $40 an hour is CHEAP!

This is pretty much it. Beeping is a hardware failure. 40 bucks an hour guys generally fix software issues (spyware, viruses, etc) on site.

Some computers are configured to have a hidden system partition upon which system data is stored. This partition is not visible from Windows Explorer, and the system will not start without it.

To successfully restore such systems from a backup, you can restore the hidden system partition. By default, this is backed up by your Windows Home Server together with your other data partitions.

Some manufacturers provide recovery partitions (a hidden portion of your hard disk where a copy of the original system configuration is stored), which largely perform the same function, some do not.

It definitely sounds like a hardware problem. One of ours did this years ago and my son pulled the video card and replaced it and it worked fine. The screen was black on ours too. The beeps tell you what is wrong, so you have to listen closely to them.

Marilyn, those would be great tips if she had a software problem, unfortunately it is a hardware issue, and she can not get it to even get that far in the start up process.

Listening to the beeps is where no one in the house can agree on HOW MANY we hear  :D
I know $40 an hour is reasonable, but I also know that any replacement part (video card, Motherboard, etc.) for my system will be a little pricey and I am just trying to keep the final number as low as possible  :)

I had the PC about 2 weeks before it did not run, So I know nothing is loose in the case--unfortunately!!

I will check out all the sites everyone suggested Saturday and Sunday.

I am using my OLDIE but a Goodie system from 1996 to get online--It is so S_L_O_W but it works  :)  :) :D  :D

Dear FB, it could very well be a hardware issue, but it could also be a virus or even a microsoft update issue.

Ktreas, you can replace cards in your computer reletively easy. Unscrew the case and pop out the piece u need to replace and insert another. There are many videos on youtube which can walk you through it! Best wishes!
