ktreas, just check again to see if your daughter hears 3 beeps or 2, if it's 2 it might be the video card.

OK, We checked the RAM  :(  It was not that.  I have four sticks and each had this printed on it:  2048MB, 1024MB, 1024MB and 1024MB.

Now we listened several times for the beeps.  We could not tell if it was LONG short short or LONG short X3.

Even if it WAS the video card I tried to find another one online and the ones I found were all used, not too cool with that  :(

OH, and I want everyone to know a SINCERE THANK YOU in your help with my PC problem  :)

If you couldn't tell already, I posted on here way before you, and was trying to assist way before you as well.

So take credit because the sun came up this morning too. Your input had just as much to do with that as it did with this. 8*

Regarding the black screen of death, it happens AFTER your system completes the post test, which hers is not doing. The BSOD happens when starting to load the windows operating system, and will crash if certain files are corrupted or missing.

One last thing. Take out ALL the ram and put only one stick in. And push down on the video card to make sure it's seated securely.

Remember to ground yourself first.

Do I check only 1 RAM at a time then?  And check EACH stick one at a time, I suppose that will tell me if one or more is bad, wish I would have thought to do that earlier :)
Checking now, I asked and answered my own question--LOL--

Checked each stick of RAM individually and the same thing happened with each restart(long and short beeps).
I also did the F8 thingy suggested earlier and I believe it is my video card causing trouble--because the clicks I heard when I kept hitting F8 long after I knew it would have loaded to reformat--I believe it HAD loaded but I could not see it because my video card is broken?  Does that make sense to anyone else but me--LOL--

Now I need to find the video card I need, ANY help with that would be LOVELY.

I'd hate for you to buy the card and find out that wasn't the problem. That card probably isn't made anymore so if you want to buy new, you'd have to go with a different card.

I have not bought the card yet, there is someone from here who will nudge me in the right direction as soon as our schedules sinc, So I plan on the meeting of the minds before I spend any money.
I do have a question though regarding buying a video card:  What video card today matches up with the one I have in my PC and how do I search for it?

I tried putting in the info. I have and only came back with USED cards for sale, How do I know if a newer one from today will match what I need?
Sorry to sound so dopey--ANYTHING software wise and I am awesome fixing it, I am a HARDWARE newbie  :)

OK, pretend I just fell off a turnip truck, WHICH ONE do I buy--LOL--
And Thank you so much for taking the time to look for one  :)
The Newegg link was narrowed down to the PCI Express x16 interface for the board you listed earlier. The list starts out at the lowest prices...you'll need to pay attention to what you'll need for your monitor...like D-SUB, DVI or HDMI...looks like the first card offers all three.
$32.99 to your door is a great price.

Here's a Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart:

The best, and most expensive cards are at the top.
It's just a way to compare apples to apples.
