Funeral Services Set For Ex-Mayor Worrell
« on: July 06, 2012, 07:25:48 PM »

Funeral services have been set for former Monroe Mayor Mark G. Worrell, who died early Friday at the Cleveland Clinic, nearly five months after having life-saving heart-transplant surgery.

#Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Rupp Funeral Home. He will lie in state from 10 a,m. until services at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Rev. Evans Bentley will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.

#Mr. Worrell had become ill a couple of days ago, apparently from complications related to the surgery, was taken to Mercy Memorial Hospital and then transferred to the Cleveland Clinic, where he had gotten his new heart on Feb. 10.

#The former mayor and long-time city councilman died at about 12:47 a.m. with some family members present, according to Monroe Mayor Robert E. Clark.

#“It’s sad news,” said Mayor Clark, who had a long visit with Mr. Worrell last week when he came into Monroe City Hall to pay a water bill. “Mark was a good friend and mentor to me.”

#Funeral arrangements still are being determined.

Mark was my immediate neighbor for my first 7 years or so when I first moved to Monroe.  He could come across as odd sometimes (like most of us can or do), but I have never met a more civic minded person before in my life.

I know he loved this city, and worked diligently on top of his teaching career to gain knowledge in state and local governments and how to get the most for the city.

Great guy, wish there were move like him that would step up to leadership positions in our communities that serve his/ constituents in the same manner.

RIP, Mark!

While I never knew Mr. Worrell, I have had the impression he was respected by many.  My condolences to his family and friends.

Mark was an interesting guy......could discuss many topics intelligently, and a HUGE Tigers fan.  Could always talk city issues and we would exchange opinions across our back yard fences every other evening or so.

He was a good family man......I know he loved both of his daughters dearly.

Very outgoing too, approachable and easy to talk to.

From The Blade this morning:

Quote
MONROE -- Former Monroe Mayor Mark G. Worrell, who devoted his life to the improvement of the city, died Friday at the Cleveland Clinic. He was 63.

Mr. Worrell, who survived cancer in the 1990s that led to a heart condition, died of complications related to heart transplant surgery he underwent in February.

"He was always motivated by his love for the city and the people of Monroe," his daughter Adrienne Worrell said.

Mr. Worrell's political service spanned more than 20 years. In 1980, he was elected a city councilman and served in that capacity periodically until 2004, his daughter said.

In 2007, he was elected mayor, but served only one term, deciding not to seek re-election in 2009 for health reasons.

"Mark always listened to and worked with people. He was extremely humble, but his leadership moved things forward," said C.D. (Al) Cappuccilli, former longtime mayor of Monroe, who preceded Mr. Worrell in office. The two became good friends when Mr. Cappuccilli served as mayor and Mr. Worrell was a councilman and often mayor pro tem.

Born May 27, 1949, in Monroe, to Carl and Ramona Worrell, Mr. Worrell spent most of his life in the city. Influenced by his parents, he became very involved with serving the community.

I was glad to have an opportunity to speak with him for a while a few months ago - he was a friend and one respected by many throughout  the community.

I have no way of knowing for sure, but I doubt Mark was part of the MT community of users.

Does that mean MT members don't have great smiles?

It's difficult to imagine anybody interested in the community could resist having a voice on what I'd deem the pulse of the County.
