Drought worst since 1956
« on: July 16, 2012, 05:13:14 PM »

http://www.indystar.com/article/20120716/LOCAL/207160337/Drought-sprawls-across-largest-section-U-S-since-1956
"This summer, 80 percent of the U.S. is abnormally dry, and the report said the drought expanded in the West, Great Plains and Midwest last month with the 14th warmest and 10th driest June on record.

The nation's corn and soybean belt has been especially hard hit over the past three months, the report said. That region has experienced its seventh warmest and 10th driest April-to-June period."

91 year old indiana farmer on drought of 1936:
"The corn only got to about 3 feet high, and with no water available, it just turned brown," he said. "Back then, we didn't plant corn until the first of June, because of the chance of frost and freeze. I can still see that short corn and how brown it got. Just like it's going to get this year if we don't get any rain."

cannot believe how shallow the River Raisin has become....looks more like a creek bed than a river ......can see the overflow dams down near Roessler.....we've only lived here ten years....how long will it take for the river to 'fill up'?

The gates are open at the dams, so the water flows through the dams rather than getting backed up behind them.  They do that regularly for river cleanup, plus I believe it helps control the invasive grass that has been clogging up the river.

it was 91 in Monroe, 91 in Midland and 91 in Marquette!!!

many days it will be 20-30 degrees cooler on the shore of Lake Superior, but not the last few days...

oh, and it was 77 and raining in Sebring Florida :o :o :o

Farm land is getting harder and harder to find.  Right now I have my sights on a long stretch of ground, located between Dundee and Monroe.  The only problem is that it's still just a little too wet to plow.  I should be able to get in there if it dries up just a little bit more.

And those pesky dams kind of get in the way...  Have to plow around them...

Live,
You better get those carbide tips on the plow too. those big flat dry light brown spots are solid exposed rock. A lot of people don't realize that the river bottom is the surface rock layer.

With the price of corn these days, I can use dynamite, I figure.   ;D

The NWS says we have officially hit 100 degrees in Monroe...

https://www.facebook.com/monroenews/posts/10151042915326692

I'm showing 100 here...   98 in Midland, 71 in Marquette (more like a normal difference up there...   and nice until it's in the winter and -30!!!)...

and in Sebring Florida...

it's 84 under mostly cloudy skies 8* 8* 8*
