Do you decorate your home for any holiday?
« on: July 16, 2012, 09:20:29 PM »

My mom had cut-outs made of ?something? and she would decorate our front window for every holiday. Do you do that?  I do have Easter decorations and of course, Christmas, but that is it for me.  How about you?

The last several years we've been gone for Christmas so we don't decorate much.  A couple of years ago some friends gave us a very nice wreath so we put that on the front door.

We usually put out a flag or bunting for Memorial Day and the 4th of July and Veteran's Day.

Now that our kids are grown it just isn't as much fun to decorate for things though.

I decorate a little at Christmas, but nothing like when the kids lived at home.  I agree, it just isn't the same as when they were little and we decorated almost every major holiday.   I still try to put out the flag on special days of recognition.  Kind of miss those "old days."

Christmas - lights outside
Halloween/fall/Thanksgiving - Pumpkins, gords, and corn stalks
Easter - the "egg" tree
4th - flag (flown all year) and fireworks

There are several homes around the county that seem to celebrate "EVERY" holiday with some form of outside display...

My kids are still pretty little, so I do tend to decorate at least a bit (front door wreath, minimum) for every 'Hallmark' holiday. I probably decorate the most for Halloween, then Christmas, then Easter, then Valentine's and St Patrick's Day. Maybe the weather has more to do with the order of that list than anything else. I'd like to hang lights outside for Christmas, but I absolutely do NOT want to be freezing my backside while doing--or undoing--it. lol

I love decorating, but haven't had space for much in the past few years. This is my first year in the new house, so I'm planning on it. Just a matter of making time.

Twenty five years ago we decorated for every holiday. At Christmas we put up tons of lights, lawn ornaments, sleigh, reindeer, trees, presents etc. We have a huge Silver maple tree and I would fill it full of lights. I had to climb an eight foot step ladder and hold onto a 20 foot long pipe to get them anywhere near the top. People driving down the road would pull up and ask us what it was supposed to be, and I would tell them just lights in a tree. We had a yard full of decorations and hanging ornaments from that tree, every year.

We decorated for Valentine's day. I made a 4 foot heart out of wire and attached red lights and hung it in the front window. That led to a Shamrock on St. Patrick's Day and a Rabbit on Easter, a Flag for Flag day and 4th of July, a pumpkin on Halloween, and a turkey on Thanksgiving. Back then you couldn't buy any of those decortions so I made them. I should have patented my idea. Now you can buy all kinds of them but most are very small, mine were 4 foot wide. People would come up to the door and ask where they can buy one, and were upset when I told them I made them.

Of course the light bulbs would lose their color so I ended up making them several times over. I started with 12 gauge electrical wire because it would form easy, then I tried wooden cutouts, and eventually switched to flat aluminum rods that would last a lot longer. We also put up those blow up decorations for each holiday, when they became available.

Then I got old. Need I say more?
