catching pollywogs.
Me too...except for the time I thought I saw a rabbit scurry into a hole....I stuck my arm in and pulled out a creature with a large thick tail.
It tried to reach up and bite me but I shifted its weight like a yo-yo to keep it at bay.
Too afraid to let it go, I feared it would attack me so I strained to walk the 1/2 mile home with my arm outstretched. Seemed to take forever but I finally arrived and caged the creature. (to this day I still have well developed deltoids) Wasn't long before the animal escaped though.
I believe it was a muskrat...but could've been an opossum...the details about the creature has been lost due to the various brain injuries.
I still recall the water moccasin snakes swimming in the water-filled ditches alongside the RR tracks...I'm just glad Michigan doesn't have gators.
I also loved riding my bike down steep hills....the only downside was getting a tire caught in one of those erosion ruts.
A river was at the bottom of the hill...not real close though...plenty of time to stop before landing in the water.
There was a giant tree there with a thick rope attached....lots of fun swinging across the river and ending right back at the same riverbank.
Except the time I came in backwards and my tailbone hit the tree....it was an excruciating long walk home...certainly couldn't ride my bike....not even with my weight just on the pedals.
Loved that bike though....did wheelies all the time....and then moved up to a minibike....and finally a motorcycle but by that time my days of being a kid were over.
