We've disconnected cable from the TV and bought a Roku. We spent about 30 bucks a month for Hulu Plus and Netflix; between the two we have more than enough to watch. The Roku has a bunch of free channels, as well (public domain movies, foreign channels, sports, fitness, cooking, lectures, etc)

Does Roku have a monthly charge, and can you get local news and weather on it?

I sometimes wonder if it's all that good, to be connected 24/7. . .

You can be as connected as you want to be...

just like your phone, you don't have to answer it if you don't want to...

I'm somewhat of a "news junkie" and I admit to laying in bed and going through the news links in the middle of the night...   but, I used to get up and get on the computer and get on HERE in the middle of the night and I don't do that near as often now.

I like having the smart phone for my work.  I don't use it very often to actually do the work but if someone has a question or a rush order or something I can log on and take care of it right from my phone.  In the days bygone I would get an email (I've been able to get email on my phone for probably 10 years) and then have to go find the closest library or a wifi connection IF I happened to have my laptop with me.

But my smartphone is in hand or very close by...

24-7...   but I can still decide when and where to "connect" ;) ;) ;)

we use comcast for cable and internet..... I don't care for their customer service much but we argue for good deals by threatening to leave cable behind...which I would in a heartbeat but my husband likes the sports..... we usually pay only a fraction of what most do without signing any contracts....less than 75 for internet and loaded cable...... my son shares his netflix account with us so we don't pay anything for that.... husband has a laptop and smart phone from work so he's hooked up for internet at home.... we still have the old dial phones in our house and newer phone services won't work with them....so no home service..... only had cell phones (verizon) for years....

Roku's just the box; there are various "channels" you install (like apps) that range from free to a monthly charge. I doubt you can get local news on it (al jazeera has a channel, as does Fox and CNN).

These are all the channels you can get, most of them are free:

I thought this article may be helpful to some looking at this option.

Making the switch to Internet TV

By Brian Proffitt

July 27, 2012, 8:00 AM — You may have pondered the notion of dropping your cable TV service in favor of obtaining all of your TV through Internet-based services.

It seems pretty attractive, particularly when you see subscription fees for some services running around $8 to $10 a month, and your cable TV bill is at $60 to 80 a month -- more if you like premium services. But what exactly is involved in cutting the cable? Is it really going to deliver the same TV experience you want with a real savings in your pocketbook?

This experience is something that I recently walked through with my own household. Based on what I learned, here are steps to take to see if cutting the cable is right for you.

Thanks excelsior.  That was a good read.  Now I'll have to do the homework and see how it works out for me.
