You Didn't Build That.
« on: July 25, 2012, 07:30:32 PM »

Interesting how it hasn't been brought up here yet.  What's everyone's opinion on perhaps the biggest misstep we will see Obama make this election season?

All Obama can do now is argue that he was taken out of context.  But, it sure sounds like he was talking about that, a business, not those, roads teachers etc.

Clearly Charles is not happy.

Krauthammer Rips Obama over you didn't build your business remarks.

Not a misstep.  A statement that is taken out of context ON PURPOSE is the usual anymore.  That is why no one bothered.

Wow i'm not sure how it was taken out of context though.  The whole quote is along the same lines.

REALLY?

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

"So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the G.I. Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.""

The whole thing says that WE as a people of this country built the infrastructure, the education the tools for that one business to be able to succeed.  The distortion purports that he says no one in any business was had the ability to do it and had to have big brother to make it happen.

Which business is it that started this year that didn't need public utility transmission, telephones, internet, water, and road to get there.  Which one never ever will need police or fire protection?

In other words a purposeful distortion of is words as a lie.  But, that is cool, if all you man has is lies then he isn't much of a candidate.

Just curious, is there one thing that Romney has not been on both sides of?  Is there one thing you feel he has not lied about and really will stick to his guns over?

Ummm.. yes, exactly. Everything along the lines of businesses are depenant on govt, not the other way around.  So.. yeah, REALLY!

And usually when someone refers to roads and bridges, they would say, "you didn't build them".

I get what he tried to say... he misspoke... BADLY!  He should have included the you didn't build that before addressing corporate owners, and he should have rephrased it to say something more like "With the help of the infrastructure built by taxpaying American people you have been able to create amazing wealth!  Please do not use that infrastucture to take our jobs elsewhere!"

Either his speach writers failed him or he tried to go off the cuff.  Either way it was not a great soundbite and could "bite" him down the road.

Fixed it for you as your quote "closure" was missing,

I also agree it was a bad expression and one that leads for political baggage as he has been poorly managed in his campaign so far.

He did say it - so you shouldn't be shocked that people are poking fun at it.
The fact that it's Politics, where soundbites live,  - where you pounce upon your competitions weakness or errors, and campaign on most everything but your own "Record"...

Nice... haven't had a Jefferson Starship moment in a while...

Fun facts:

“We Built This City” is a song written by Bernie Taupin, Martin Page, Dennis Lambert, and Peter Wolf, and originally recorded by the group Starship and released as its debut single on November 10, 1985. The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, best known for his longtime collaboration with Elton John. The song features Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick on lead vocals, and the single version reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on November 16, 1985, and also number twelve in the United Kingdom. The song was engineered by Grammy-winning producer Bill Bottrell and arranged by Bottrell and Jasun Martz.
