WTF?
« on: August 07, 2012, 11:35:43 AM »

Sons fiance was running our dog on a leash this morning, ran by Boyd Park, 4th and Harrison, when they were attacked by a loose pit bull.  She picked up dog to protect it, but she was scratched by jumping dog.  Owners of attacking dog responded to the dog, watching the whole thing, so slowly, a good Samaritan grabbed the attacking dog taking it to the owners.
She came home, described what happened, told them she was scratched but did not need medical attention.  She wanted to make a police report.  Central Dispatch told her to call Animal Control  So you cannot make a police report any more about attacking dogs?
Animal Control told her to go back to scene and they would send someone to try and find dog.  Yea  I went by 2 min later and dog and owners vanished.  LUCKY FOR THEM  Maybe 1 less dog in this world to attack another person or animal  Guess MPD are too busy fighting fires or running rescues to do their job.  Believe me, if I see that dog again running loose, well...........

Don't blame the dog for what was the owners fault.  If you should do anything to anyone, it should be to the owners of the dog.

I agree...Pet owners should be in control of their animals all of the time...!

If that dog had attacked me or my family, it would be dead.  I wouldn't be worrying about the police showing up to fill out a report... I'm sure they would be there.

BTW, to the OP....

This is another damn good reason for you and your fiance to get a CPL, and use it.

It could save your life.  Just a thought.

Dog owners who let their animals run loose should be fined heavily!   VERY heavily.

My son was chased by a loose german shepherd when he was around 10.  I saw the thing fix its eyes on him and then slowly (as if to stalk) creep up from a laying position and then run right at him. It looked like wolf behavior.

My son was walking away from the dog and never saw it coming, but I did.  I ran toward the dog and with a yell I never knew I had.  It continued after my son who saw me charging toward him and looked behind to see the dog coming.  Without even thinking, my son jumped up onto a neighbor's yard swing that sent him up away from the dog and gave me time to kick the $*** out of the dog. The swing came back and my son used the momentum to kick the dog in the face.   I kicked it one more time in the gut and it returned to its yard.

All that noise and commotion across the street and the owner never knew what happened.

You can imagine the "talk" I had with the owners that included information that they would be hearing from law enforcement and animal control.  (And they did)

He already shoots neighborhood cats by his own admission. I don't think he needs any additional incentive to kill.

You should shoot the owners not the dogs.  Has anyone on this website actually had experience with Pits?  They're very loving dogs.  Chiuauas are more aggressive than pits, and German Shepards and Dobermans were bred to kill humans.

Calling them "pit" bulls has evolved over time.  They are actually Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

Quote
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is extremely courageous and obedient, highly intelligent and affectionate with a sense of humor. This, coupled with its affection for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, makes it a foremost all-purpose dog. He looks forward to daily exercise, and his powerful jaws enjoy a supply of sturdy chew toys. While he is a sweet-tempered, affectionate dog, his strength and determination require an experienced owner who can work with him in a firm, but gentle way. The Staffie’s coat is short and smooth, and needs only a quick brushing once a week.

Here's one of the most famous "pitbulls" there ever was...

and most people don't even realize Tige was a pit...

They are loving dogs if you raise them right, but not in general...They are close bred dogs and are stubborn, bullheaded and aggressive by nature, they are loyal and protective to a fault, one has to work with a pitbull to make it nice...I personally do not like the breed and do not trust them(along with dobermans, rottweilers and german shepherds).  I have known several through the years and that is my stance on them...You can love your dog all you want, just keep it away from me and keep it on a leash, even in your own yard...loose dogs cause trouble regardless of it's demeanor!

I agree, pits can be very loving dogs.  So can Shepards, and dobermans.
All of these breeds can also be killers.

My point is that the use of deadly force is justified, if one's life is in imminent danger.  If a dog is coming at my throat, I'm not going to be thinking about finding the owner of the dog, at that moment.  I will stop the threat.  Yes, the owner may ultimately be responsible for the dog's behavior, and for allowing the dog to run free.  But that doesn't stop the immediate threat of a dog (whatever the breed) attacking me, or my family.

You're on to something right there Baggins...   dogs are very "territorial" critters.  When you enter "their area" they will protect it!  The last dog that bit me was a small black lab mix...   not really aggressive acting at all...   but I was in the owner's yard (invited).  Turned my back on it and it bit me right in the back of my ankle.  Not real hard but it did hurt.  I was carrying a 15" adjustable wrench in my hand at the time and as I was preparing to adjust the dog's attitude the owner came running out to get the dog.

Oldest daughter got bit a few years ago about the same way...   but she never heard or saw the dog...  it never made a sound!  Just bit her as she was walking away!!!

I've even seen the big red dog go after the FedEx driver...   she snapped at the back of his pant legs as he was leaving our back door.  I still don't know if she was trying to bite his ankle or if she was just going after the back of his floppy pant leg.  Maybe it's a "lab thing" to go for the ankle.  She is definitely big enough she could have gone much higher.

The irony is she had known him since she was a puppy.  Even knew where he kept the dog treats in the truck and would go in and help herself.  That was the first time I ever saw her do anything more than bark at someone and we've had to be a lot more careful with her since then.

Get her away from home and she's a completely different dog!

When the only defensive tool you have is a gun....the answer to every perceived problem for a cowardly gun-nut is obvious.

Takes a "special" person to shoot a dog.  8*
