Eriemermaid, I have been thinking about your bugs all day and did a little internet searching.   I think they might be midges

Found this article from Cleveland that mentions them; there is a picture on the page:
http://cleveland.about.com/od/livingincleveland/f/midges.htm

Question: What Are those Cleveland Bugs?

Answer: Each spring and fall, Cleveland's lakefront communities are invaded by small, harmless, mosquito-like insects called midges. They only stay about five-ten days, but the swarms can be startling to visitors and newcomers. The small, 1/8 to 1/2" long insects are properly called chironomus plumorsus and commonly, but erroneously, called Canadian soldiers. They spawn in the lake when Lake Erie warms to around 60 degrees and then again in the fall when the lake cools. They have a life span of around five to ten days.Midges are beneficial as they provide food for a variety of freshwater fish and other aquatic creatures. The little insects also helped the Cleveland Indians to win the 2007 ALCS series when a swarm unnerved Yankees pitcher, Joba Chamberlin.

For the past three years I would get a few teeny tiny bugs around my computer when it was on an enclosed shelving system.  I never knew what they were, but this spring I eliminated the cabinet-style and now have a desk---no teensy bugs yet this year.   Now I would bet they were these darned midges.

Erie, they only live 5-10 days, so in a week they should be gone.  :( . Too bad that gas leak didn't knock 'em out for you.

Interesting that it was about 3 weeks later last year :-\ :-\ :-\

Here's some more info on them and the damage they are causing to the Michigan deer population:

This year we have some of the largest bumblebees I have ever seen!  Also, we have seen bugs we have never seen before (one was some sort of dragonfly, but I can't even remember much about it except that it was almost transparently clear)
