Fact check: Romney's tax claims challenged by nonpartisan report

Mitt Romney made two claims about his tax plan that deserve scrutiny: That it would not lower the tax burden on upper-income households and would not add $5 trillion to the debt over the decade.

Romney’s proposed tax changes would work like this: He would cut income tax rates by 20% across the tax brackets and eliminate taxes on capital gains and dividends for those earning less than $200,000; but to avoid lost revenue – keeping the plan "revenue neutral" – he calls for closing tax loopholes and deductions enjoyed by upper-income households.

"My number one principle is there’ll be no tax cut that adds to the deficit," Romney said during Wednesday night's debate. “I want to underline that – no tax cut that adds to the deficit. But I do want to reduce the burden being paid by middle-income Americans. And to do that that also means that I cannot reduce the burden paid by high-income Americans.”

The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution, has said the Romney proposal would cost $360 billion in the first year before it is offset by closing loopholes, which others have extrapolated to estimate that it would amount to $5 trillion over the decade.

But Romney’s claim that his tax plan will not benefit upper-income earners runs into trouble in the Tax Policy Center assessment.

The report said the loopholes – popular deductions including those for mortgage interest, charitable giving and others – are not plentiful enough at the top of the income scale to cover the estimated $360-billion annual cost of reducing tax rates by 20%.

The gap would need to be filled by closing loopholes for those at lower ends of the income scale, those earning less than $200,000. Estimates say those earning between $100,000 and $200,000 would be significantly hit.

Also, the report said the trade-off between lower rates and loopholes would benefit higher-income households, which would see their overall tax burden go down while middle- and lower-income households would see their taxes rise.

Yes verbosity is easy...you've just proved that...but you've been around long enough to know responding in-kind is the normal course.

I don't give a rats behind what your opinion is...nobody asked for it.

Whether you think someone lacks "the knowledge / education or insight" to post their opinions just shows what a pompous *ss you are.

You have no idea what knowledge, education, or insight I possess....and expressing that insulting opinion has resulted in retaliatory and perhaps equally insulting replies.

I've already called your comment ignorant and clarified that the comment wasn't meant for you as a person...but with the number of ignorant posts you've made and the fact you cannot see your comment for what it was.....I'm afraid I was wrong about you....that negative connotation certainly applies to you as a person....you own it.

As expected.

Again - you were requested to not name call or try and classify and clearly you lack that ability.  Why?

I care not your level of education, knowledge or insight.  Why should I - per your opinion I am either a moron, ignorant or an idiot.  As I am none of the three what would be the point of "wondering" what your level of anything is?  There would be none.

Pompous . . . yeah, OK.  So, it is pompus of me to inform some "anonymous" person on the internet that they don't have enough knowledge / education or insight to make an assessment of my thoughts and feelings?  No, it's actually correct - you don't.  Irrespective of how many times you try to change the narrative of things that's the truth of the matter.  I will admit that considering the number of names you have called me in this thread, the assertions you have made about my scrotum's lack of hair and your assessment on my professional abilities, to have you call me "pompus" simply for telling you the truth - you don't know me nearly made me spit out a healthy swig of Red Stripe.

Clarify all you like - after you make a consistent statement, followed by personal attacks it rings nothing but hallow - like much of your other "assessments".

Still - I know the reality as I see it.  It is simple - in my opinion, you like to call people names, box them into positions that fit your narrative of how things just "have to" be.  OK - I'll be "ignorant" in your world - (eye roll).

I don't find your responses insulting . . . dude, this is the internet and in my opinion, you seem to relish the "billy bad a**" roll.  For me . . . why would I be insulted by an anonymous person?  That's silly don't you think.  I have always used my real name here and occasionally have had to deal with this type of silliness.  It's not equally insulting at all.  As I said before and will repeat again . . . I find it repulsive.

anyhow . . .

The key word in your diatribe is "inform"

How can you "inform" someone that they have "neither the knowledge / education or insight" to post an opinion when you actually don't know anything about that person??

Tell you what....man up and pay me a visit....I'll show you the real me.
Don't expect a nice friendly visit....I'll show you I'm more than just a big mouth on the 'net.
How hood are you white boy?
You say you're accustomed to dealing with people from the street?
How about those you pretend to know so much about...the incarcerated?
Well let's test your education...bring your classy self out my way...we'll settle this personal grudge you have with me.
Personally I don't think you have the gonads.

Romney gets big boost from coal company

Mitt Romney is getting a big boost from a major coal company. According to a new report from The New Republic, Murray Energy CEO Robert Murray makes his salaried employees give to Republican candidates as well as the company PAC. The New Republic's Alec MacGillis tells Ed Schultz what he learned about this prominent coal company.

Again . . . as expected.

I'll go slow and pray that you follow.  When someone (you) offers an opinion regarding what my politics are then follows it up with personal attacks it is only correct to point out that because (a) you don't know me that you (b) can not have the knowledge / education or insight to make a determination of my thoughts and feelings - seems pretty simple.  I mean - it is now what you are changing your narrative to use as your defense.

Actually - I am in Frenchtown a lot.  I have family and friends that live there - I graduated from Jefferson in 1986.

Threaten all you like - I see you as nothing but an internet bully - that's all.  You resort to name calling and questioning others manhood, education, professionalism and whatever ad homonym you can regurgitate at the time.  Its neither scary nor effective.  Either way - as I have said earlier - I find the persona you seem to have adopted here on MT repulsive - why in the name of all that is holy would I want to spend any of my time around you?

But, I get it.  OK. You say in one post you don't want to continue and finish with a "get bent" only to entrench yourself with hateful, bigoted remarks for the next several hours - to what end?  Would you rather not attempt to expand your base of knowledge by learning why others hold the positions that they do?  Nah, you would rather try and intimidate and act tough.  The thing is - that's sad considering your behind the keyboard of a computer?

White boy - really?  Oh - I forgot you have given your pedigree in the past and view yourself differently.  Personal grudge . . . I don't know you and have no desire to know you - how can this be personal?  You are the one that seems to lurk into individuals personal lives (commenting on photos, bring up occupations and so on), notice - I have not done that once (although, I did and will continue to admit that I find your demeanor and persona on MT as nothing short of "repulsive".  I would wager that in "real life" your a much different person but that's just a guess and I could be wrong - although, as I have communicated, I don't really care).  Nah - you misunderstand.  This is not personal, not at all.

Ya know, a cursory examination of my resume on Linkedin - (as I NEVER hide behind an anonymous name because I am always willing to support and defend my thoughts and feelings - otherwise, I would not share them) would show my experience and education.  Once you do, I think you will find that I actually have the education, experience and knowledge on a good range of topics in the human services field to have maybe, just maybe, learned a couple of thins.  Please also note that of all this experience has taught me one sure thing and that is dealing with one who wishes to call names, threaten violence, question ones manhood and so on, it is the samething always . . . . as Pres. Obama and Gov. Duvall Patrick once said; "just words" which is why it is never personal.

anyhow . . . . continue on . . . .

The narrative remains the same...you said:
Why must you continue to classify people when you have neither the knowledge / education or insight to do so.
And that was in response to my comment:
The bottom line...Romney can do no wrong for people like you.
Whether he won or lost wouldn't make any difference...your mind is made up.

Now that really wasn't meant specifically for you...but more toward all the Romney supporters.

Actually - I am in Frenchtown a lot.  I have family and friends that live there - I graduated from Jefferson in 1986.
That doesn't bode well for the quality of the educational system in the area.

I didn't threaten...I merely offered you an opportunity to become a hero to all the righties like you. Instead you've proven my point. You calling ME a bully was certainly a hoot considering you've been the one on the attack. I responded in-kind...pretty much tossed back what you were dishing out. I confronted you and you punked-out.

It was apparent your opinion was cast in concrete so yes I tried to move on...but you kept instigating.

Now look, you were the one that insulted me with your comment:
Why must you continue to classify people when you have neither the knowledge / education or insight to do so.
And while you are continually touting your education...your posts indicate you've either achieved that education by the skin of your teeth or created false credentials...neither of which is any of my business...I merely would like to post my opinions without you bullying me into silence because YOU don't believe I have the knowledge / education or insight to do so

anyhow . . . . continue on . . . .
You certainly enjoy belaboring insignificant points.

I suspect you're addicted to the accolades you've been receiving via the PM system.

Fact check: Romney's tax claims challenged by nonpartisan report

"Cutting tax expenditures will result in a net tax cut for high-income tax payers and a net tax increase for lower- and or middle-income taxpayers," the report said.

The Romney campaign has refused to say which loopholes it would close, and Romney did not clear up the question Wednesday. The campaign has said the choices would be debated in the future.

  ;)

I must admit your comical if nothing else.  You make the choice to ignore that you assume my mind is made up and that somehow you know how I think and feel.  Oh, OK.

In terms of anything else - whatever.  I stand by everything I have written and infact considering your desire to continually try and change the narrative and become a victim, whatever.

Dude, you can be all rambling here and continue the role you have chosen to take and as I have said, I find it repulsive.  But - throwing in your insinuations on everything else it is actually beyond that - IMO.

As I have said and will continue to say; you have a right to your opinion - you should just try and temper that with simple logic and reason.

Punked out . . . really, what are we in high school?  Dude, clearly hear this - I don't know who you are . . . you clearly know my real name and I am pretty simple to locate.  Punk out from what - meeting someone I have no desire to meet or have any social connection to?    Yeah - OK.

Anyhow - in terms of your thought that I am getting a lot of accolades - nope - none.  I have received a PM from anyone.  Honestly, stop assuming so dog gone much.  Maybe work on sharing your voice and your own thoughts and feelings - you just might grow in understand and acceptance of all world view - seriously - that's a good thing.

I will say that it is amusing how something can be written yet the actual words of it seem to have different meanings.   Reminds me of when Pres. Clinton so graciously questioned, "it depends what the meaning of "is", is".

Anyhow . . . . I won't end with a derogatory remark (you know like, "get bent") but I will say, "do what you do" and continue to be the caricature that you chose.  Me, I all continue to be . . . oh, me.

(btw - how do you copy a post, write inside of it and then write below it?  Is that an editing thing?  Serious question - I am unaware of how this is done - thx.).
