Another example. SMCC has about 150(guess) students. Take the scores of MHS's top 150 and they will average out just as high or higher than parochial.

Correction SMCC has about 450 students. With their college prep scores as high as they are, I would say that is a really good academic school. I did not graduate from either SMCC or MHS, but a public school in the county that I think is excellent. So, good schools are out there! I think the best ones are the schools that fit your kids. If the kids like school, they have a better chance of success. Only my opinion. :)

Crysti,

In my post I was guessing at students per grade, not entire school. It is clear in the upper part, but not in the lower part. I was taking scores per grade. Your comments make sense. I was just commenting on Chris' post. After I reread my post, the bottom part taken out of context could be read school total.

Gotta, thanks for the clarification. Mathematically broken down, what you say makes sense. There probably is about 100-150 students per grade.  :)

Whenever I look at this thread I can't help but think of my parents' philosophy of school: the quality of a school is only as good as the students makes it out to be.  You can be in a great school and have no family support to help the process, or you can be a lazy student; you can also be an honor student at a lesser school but get a quality education.  Education is what you make of it, and not every school works for every kid or family.

I'm a proud MHS grad, and let me tell you, I had a ton of homework every night. I was doing my calculus homework at my job. I also played tennis on top of the extracurricular activities.

There are some bad seeds at MHS- but I learned how to deal with people different than me, people that had more problems than I do, people from different backgrounds.

To me, it's up to the parents to make sure their children are learning. Work with the teacher, find out what needs to be done and do it.

From reading your posts from this and other threads, you sound like one of those spoon fed kids whose parents paid for you to go to parochial schools.

no i was not spoon fed like you say.  i had to work part time during the school year and full time in the summer to pay for my high school education.  my parents wanted me to go to a catholic school, and they also wanted me to earn it myself.

You seem to be making blanket statements about all MHS students. You need to do some research. I went to school with students who are doctors, lawyers, engineers, and the like. What do you have to say about that.

maybe i am making blanket statements, thats my opinion.  i did not go to MHS, but everyone i know that went there told me how the classes were a joke, that most kids slept and talked on their phones all day.  and when it came to homework, they said they hardly had any, and that most of their classes didnt even have a book for them to take home to do homework.  i may be wrong, and maybe that was just some people, but like i said, everyone i know that went there has told me the same things.

SMCC is a catholic school, so I would say that the majority of students are catholic. So are you saying that the protestant students at MHS are incompetent or are not getting a good education?

that is absolutely NOT what i said.  i dont know where you got that from reading my posts.  this thread has NOTHING to do about what religion you are.  the point of this thread is to give our opinions on what schools we think are the best.

Parochial schools do not pay enough for single female teachers to survive.

no they do not.  and thats why if you look at the teachers in parochial schools, most of them have been there all their lives.  there are not many "new" teachers in parochial schools.  but the ones that are there work hard and are extremely dedicated to the catholic school system.

Quote
Lastly, are your boating friends, MHS graduates or parochial school graduates?

again this has NOTHING to do about this thread.  if you want to keep bashing me because i have a boat that i worked hard for and you dont, you can talk to me through messaging.  and just to answer your question, my friends that have boats came from both high schools.

I have read all your posts on this thread and I am trying to understand them. So are you saying that you just hung out with the lower level students at MHS and not the upper level students?

no, most of my friends that went to mhs were 3.0-4.0 students.  i dont really have any friends in the "lower level" as you call it.  everything i have said about mhs comes from what those friedns of mine have told me.

They must not have been in the accelerated or college prep classes. There are basically two schools at MHS. They must have been in that upper level of the lower level, if you know what I mean. Do they have good jobs now, are they unemployed, or do they live off their spouses? What kind of line of work did SMCC  prepare you for?

Thats enough you two. School is what you make out of it. I would wager to say that MHS and SMCC both offer a challenging college prep curriculum and an easier curriculum. Can you both agree on that?

I'm not quite sure how you could compare schools unless you've been to them all.

When we moved to Monroe 3+ years ago I was a little concerned about the schools, especially after looking at houses in Dundee and seeing the brand new schools there.

But I have to say now that I'm not in any way dissapointed with Waterloo School.  It's been extremely wonderful for my kids.  I have four children and two with learning problems.  My daughter is getting the special help she needs.  My son (4 yrs) is enrolled in ISD (now at Cantrick) and is doing extremely well.  I've also been impressed with the programs they have available for our kids.  And my oldest son just LOVES to learn and very much into history and the like.  The teachers just love him and challenge him, too, knowing that he needs it.

I don't know about other schools in the area but I've been very pleased with Waterloo.

Many Blessings!

Were you looking for only schools in the city of monroe?  What about Ida, Jefferson, Airport, Dundee, or Mason.  My son is at Sodt this year and he loves it.  His last three teachers have been awesome.  Jefferson gets a bad rap sometimes but the teachers are great.  My son is actually excited about going to school.

I went to Raisinville. At the time it was a good school. I have no present knowledge of things there.

My oldest boy went to Custer. It was a major disappointment.

Now both of our boys go to Ida schools. We have been extremely happy with Ida and would recommend them to anyone.

I went to Catholic schools my whole life. I think 1st - 8th grade it really did me good to have the smaller class size and the one on one attention. But I went to Monroe Catholic Central and at that time it was $1200 per year and when you started as a Freshman you were given a placement test. If you score well you take college prep classes, score not so well and you end up in the lower level classes. Now SMCC is $6600 per year and I here that the classes are much better and they try and direct you into alll college prep. Back in my days if you paid your tuition you could graduate. Now I here you will be tossed out if your grades are low. They have a lot of after school help for those who need it. But I can honestly say: I don't think I ever did homework as a high school student. My children have gone to Ida for the past 9 years. It is a great school and could never justify the $6600 per year to go to SMCC. They still get there religion from CCD so they are not lacking there. I figure $2200 per year for 1st-8th grade =$17,600 and then $6600 9th-12th =$26,400 for a total of $44,000. WOW
Invested over 12 years that would easily pay for some of the best colleges out there.
Think about it MCCC is about $2000 per year with a full class load.
