I would think that these trucks would be frozen into the surface ice.   I do not think that a tow truck would get the job done.

It looks like a job for a 4 wheel drive tractor with a few feet of ground clearance.  I think that you would need to use the tractor as an ice breaker to free these trucks from the ice before they could be pulled out.

Reading the comments on MN Facebook, sounds like a friend pulled them out with a tractor.   their names are in the comments, and they posted, too.

The driver couldn't have done a more 'precise' job of blocking all 3 lanes if he had tried:

I see at least 2 other vehicles with damage!

The face book page on these kids and their trucks is hilarious reading...

they were mudding and the lake tide came in - thus the ice,   16" ,  they apparently pulled them out with a towstrap and a tractor...   young highschool kids - with a story to tell for a long time, as they made some of the Detroit morning radio shows.

16" of ice is a lot of ice...  safe enough for way heavier vehicles than they had out there!

I just think this whole 'story' must have happened on a slow news day ;) ;) ;)

It said the water was only 16" deep where they were...

That sounds more like it and the pictures would support that...  if they had been 'mudding' in a borrow pit somewhere and the same thing happened this would have been a 'non event'!!!

I was outside cleaning up the sidewalks and driveway this afternoon...  when I came in one time to check on the dogs (ok, to get warmed up) I heard LaSalle calling central to send someone for some environmental clean-up at the chocolate tanker site...  I figured it was for fuel spill on the tractor...  turns out at least some of the chocolate leaked out of the tank apparently!  I'm not sure if it would be considered a bio hazard or just a sticky mess on the road!!!

A deputy on the scene told a Blade reporter it looked like a chocolate milkshake in the snow!!!

I heard on the scanner a call for Frenchtown from a 40 year old woman with foot pain.
Who calls 911 for foot pain?

Oh it's much worse than that/  I have friends in bedford that are on FD.
Some people call all the time to get help getting out of bed, bathroom etc.

Who calls 911 for foot pain?

This is a scenario that has definitely gone downhill in the last 20 years...

maybe she didn't have any way to get to emergency care...

maybe she didn't have insurance...

maybe she didn't want to spend any money and figured she'd take advantage of the 'free' EMS system :( :( :(

I don't remember near as many calls like that back when I was running as a first responder...

We had a neighbor up north...   an older gentleman...  a neighbor...   I actually ran over there one night on a call during a night like this!  Quicker to run than get the snow cleaned off my truck and started and drive 200 yards!  He slept in his recliner chair and would regularly decide about 4am that he was having a heart attack and call 911...   More than once I thought he was just lonesome but of course for anything heart related you have to go!  One morning I stopped in at the local store for coffee and one of the neighbors mentioned the 'old guy' (I honestly don't remember his name now) had died during the night...   heart attack...  but he never got his call off :o :o :o

Anyway...    there are more and more of these 'non' emergency type calls and they seem to be increasing!

Not sure if it's 'economic' related or just 'mindset' related :-\ :-\ :-\

I never got upset with calls like that blue2...  I do hear a lot of them in Bedford but not that many more than in the city or Frenchtown...

I think it's part a 'fact of life' today.  People are living longer and wanting to remain 'independent' longer!  They push themselves to extremes to stay at home before they have to go to 'home' at $8-10,000 a month.  When we did have them they were always dispatched as 'non-emergency' and that's the way I hear the Bedford calls.  Quite frequently a couple of firefighters or perhaps even one of them a trainee just take the pickup and drive over to the patient's home...   no emergency involved.

Frequently these types of calls are a 'wake-up' call for their family members to give them stronger 'encouragement' to make some new living arrangements.  Part of it too is technology...  we now have these necklace or pendant alarms that people can wear so they can call for help even if they're on the floor.  In older days they might have just stayed on the floor for a few days until they became an emergency response or a DOA!!!  As long as they have made arrangements for access (lockbox preferred to just hiding a key) ahead of time I didn't mind them.  You tend to hear one at an address...   and then a couple of more closer together and then not hear them anymore because they've finally made other arrangements.

More on the 'chocolate' tanker crash yesterday at exit 9...

According to this report (with video of them lifting the tanker) none of the chocolate spilled on the road...   so I'm wondering if the report of it mixing in the snow was an error of if maybe it started leaking after it was moved off the road and onto the shoulder where there was snow ??? ??? ???

I guess the main thing is no one was seriously hurt...   I can see how this could have easily turned into one of those multi vehicle crashes like the other two in the state yesterday!!!
