You stay classy Monroe!
« on: April 19, 2013, 04:17:42 PM »

Born and raised in Monroe, I've watched this town deteriorate rapidly in the past 10 or so years.  I've heard it from different LE in my age group that this town IS NOT what it was when we were growing up.

Crime ridden and full of trashy people.  Headline after headline of crime, and these are the things that actually make it to the paper, as my LE friend said I'd be stunned by what does not.

There used to be a time when the "east end" was just kind of a joke as it really wasn't that bad.  Now we have east, west, north and south, you name it.  I've been holding in this rant for quite a while as I'm reminded of the FEW bright spots left here, but it seems the headlines are drowning out such a light.

But this recent headline about the drive by shooting because of "Drug Gang Turf War" was the last straw.  Really, when this housing market picks up a bit, sadly it might be time to say goodbye to this once fun and safe little town.

Flanders, you could not be more correct.  I live in a neighborhood where I grew up,  and I cannot believe how the area has run down.  Slumlords have taken advantage of the down economy.  People that do not care about anything but getting their assistance check.  Fatherless families that have kids running amok in the neighborhood.  My wife and I were recently driving on Front St and noticed how the town looks so run down  The streetscape looks like crap,, broken curbs, Monroe St falling apart.  What an embarrassment from the town I grew up in and took pride in protecting.  It will never be the same

I'm not sure this is only a 'local' issue...

I hear and read many of these same issues from people that live all across the country!

I don't go to Monroe often and never have in the years I've lived in "South County".  Always had to do Sec of State and court business downtown and it always ticked me off so I just never went to Monroe for anything else.  Lately I've gone thru on the way to Airport and to some of the sporting venues in Monroe.  It doesn't look like Detroit yet but it's getting there.

Yup.  r & blue, agreed.  It's sad, I used to be a one of Monroe's biggest supporters.  We might not have had the biggest entertainment district around, but we were a safe, clean, historically rich place to raise a family.  Now just run down socially and economically.

I think Monroe is a microcosm of what is going on in the whole country.

Less two parent families.

More people on public assistance.

More renters.

Less people who take pride in what they do, providing for their family, and keeping up their property.

This is not just a Monroe problem.

This is what happens when you go from capitalism towards socialism.

It takes Jobs to make a community successful, and they are just starting to re-appear.   May take another year or two for the Michigan "recovery" to be felt around here.

This is just the beginning, guys. This is one reason I don't live in a city.

I agree with you.

When the government checks, cheese, free lunches, and head start all start etc etc all stop there will be a large chunk of the population that won't have a clue what to do.

Just one of the many reasons being well armed is a plus - in my opinion, and probably one of the reasons our government wants to take our "assault" weapons and high capacity magazines away.

We have seen it in other countries.

Monroe Native,  It sure seems to be that the government is fostering this behavior.  It's there way of getting total control.  same sex, no sex partners.  Kids that are confused as hell.  No responsibility, no religion, don't care about school.  It's going to keep getting worse.  It's almost to the point of no return now.

I hear you.

For the last several years it sure seems like this government has been rewarding bad behavior and actively punishing good behavior.

Examples:

Bought a house you can't afford?  We will come up with programs to help you.  Bought a house you could afford?  We will let you take the loss with no compensation for your stupid neighbor who got foreclosed on.

Had a kid you can't support out of wedlock?  No problem - we will pay for your kid and for you to take care of the kid - and since you don't have time to do that we will create programs to raise your kid, we will feed your kid at school, etc etc etc.  It takes a village afterall?

Don't want to work?  That job you can find is beneath you?  No problem - we will pay you to not work for 2 years, and then if you want to continue not working you can always find a good injury and go on SSID.

Did you ever think that being a Christian and believing the word of the Bible would make you a fringe lunatic in this country?  Sorry - I think two parents are important.  I think having kids out of wedlock is a formula for failure.  I think God intended marriage to be between men and women.

All these things now make me a fringe intolerant lunatic.

I still think this can be turned around IF that is Gods will.

Otherwise I am hoping for Rapture, because I am tired of the lies that people are being told, and the poverty that the lies are dooming people to.
