Community Conflict: Causes and Cures???
« on: April 24, 2013, 08:46:14 AM »

Looking at most of this it's pretty obvious Chris is one of our members here:

Quote
When you’re in charge of making sure that a group of people — any people — get along, it’s easy to wonder if a community conflict is inevitable. And it doesn’t matter if that group of people is an online forum, a classroom, a Facebook group, a scout troop, an IRC chat room, a book club, a YouTube channel, the comments section of a blog, or a family, the answer is easy enough: yes. I know from personal experience (and maybe you do, too) that even otherwise close siblings will lock horns from time to time; the reasons may vary, but the symptoms are usually pretty easy to spot.

If you’re the moderator who’s expected to step in and resolve a community conflict, it’s wise to know how to identify problem areas ahead of time so that you’re prepared for dealing with them before they erupt and spin out of control.

Here are a few points of community conflict that I’ve seen in my time at the helm of LockerGnome and a few other places along the way.

Quote
Have you ever said something that you thought was pretty innocent and straightforward, only to have it misinterpreted by someone who took offense and blasted you back with an angry response that escalated into a full-on war of words as you defended yourself for saying something that you, ultimately, didn’t actually say?

Guy #1: I don’t care for goat cheese. There ought to be a law against it.
Guy #2: Oh? Well, the founding fathers were pretty clear about how they felt about that. Are you some kind of un-American jerkface?
Guy #1: What? What’s your problem? You’re the jerkface, jerkface!
Guy #2: No! You! Jerkface! This country was founded with the dedicated service of boat fleets! You hate freedoms!
Guy #1: Boat fleets? I said goat cheese, jerkface!
Guy #2: $%*# you! Maybe you’d have loved the USSR, comrade America hater! You wouldn’t have even been allowed to have boat fleets in the landlocked Siberian wilderness!
Guy #1: NO! $%*# YOU!

Chances are, you’ve misinterpreted what someone’s said to you, too. When it’s obvious that an unclear message is the cause of a community conflict, it’s important to clarify the original intention of a message, try and get the conflicting parties to shake hands publicly (even if it’s virtually) over the misunderstanding, and move on. Unfortunately, such division can lead to factional bickering within the thread of conversation, so everyone’s going to probably wind up swallowing some degree of pride if your community is going to carry on.

Try and recruit the ringleaders to work together — again, publicly — toward this aim. Eventually, everyone will look back on this community conflict and laugh.

So, when is it again we're supposed to start laughing ??? ??? ???

Looks like it's going to be a long, long time because we seem to have a lot of spillover lately :-\ :-\ :-\

Too many 'one dimensional' posters now that either never knew how to have fun or just never had any fun in the first place.

And so much 'hate'...  so many of you must hate yourselves the way you post around here :( :( :(

Here's the rest of the article for anyone that wants to read more:

I think it is natural that there will always be differing opinions on damn near any subject between even the best of friends, and that there are also people that will never get along with each other just out of conflicting personalities.  I see it in the workplace all the time and accept that it is a fact of life.

Electronic communication sucks when it comes to interpretation simply because one can't see the expression on another face while communicating......I think that leads to a lot of forum conflict.

Personally.....I have too much conflict in my work life to let it filter into something I enjoy like shooting the breeze in this forum.  I've always said that if I want conflict outside of work all I have to do is start a conversation with Mrs. Fuzz during off work hours.

The imperfectness of text only absolutely is a problem, or had been.  I saw it with myself as well as others.

Now, MT is too closed minded.  With Monroe Native on his spin of "all liberals are stupid" and "All liberals are socialists" and "all liberals are always wrong"  maybe not exact words but close enough.  It was intended to say that nothing anyone but far right wing loons says matters.

You know me Fuzz, I am all for discussing but there isn't any unless it is far right wing to far right wing discussion of how bad Obama is.  There have been many times I have repeated my view many times in a topic that the same posters completely ignored all attempts to know what I said to continue the tin foil hat of the day assignment of what I supposedly think rather than what I DID say.

What I see anymore is a bunch of far right nutcases spouting chain emails and agreeing with each other until someone not far wing  makes a post and they crawl out of the woodwork making personal attacks and ignore the topic.  The other day FF made one single post and boom 5 or 6 personal attacks not on topic.  Same thing happens to Monique.

The sense that I get is not that there is conflict, but that one segment doesn't want there to be any opposition to their spin so do anything and everything to silence those that don't swallow the Kool aide.

I don't get the sense as much of personality conflict with the exception of MM1 for Monique which very clearly is there. I am not even sure if there is for FF as much as he is just a fun target for personal attacks rather than a personal dislike.

I know what you are saying Duck, I chose to ignore the conflict in order to enjoy the forum as I still find it a great pastime to relax, absorb differing opinions than my own, and the little bit of comradely that is left here.  If I would have found someone who thinks and feels like me I would have ran off to Amsterdam with her years ago.   ;D

I think sometimes things are just taken too seriously here....of which I don't criticize, and sometimes find humor in the combativeness, other times I think "Wow, oh brother!" but I keep that to myself.

Differing opinions on all matters I find enlightening as there are many topics I find myself on the ladder on.  Seeing things through the eyes of those who post differing opinions I find educational until it leads into what often gets to childish banter of which I stop reading at that point.

Now.....Moaner and MM1 subject.....hell yes, I enjoy instigating just a tad bit because I do find myself going back to my youthful mischievous self with the ultimate goal of seeing ringside an all for fun battle in the Puddin' Pit.  Sorry.....we all have our own special little character flaws.   ;)  ;D

Interesting read.

I just have a disdain for stupid people I guess.  Especially towards those who actively vote on people/issues that effect my existence.  But this only happens in the politics thread when posts void of logic or supporting facts are presented.

So if anyone wants to talk about goat cheese, I'm quite certain the conversation will be civil and polite.  Nothing bad can come from a discussion of Humboldt Fog.

You mean just like you said something about me that isn't true in this post?

If you write that enough time other posters will start to believe you DUCK.

You do it all the time.  I do it.  We all do it.  Someone writes something, then someone goes off, and there it goes for 2-3 pages.

I don't think like you said.  Every political spectrum test I take I am middle right.

Where do you fall?

I think what would help this board is if some posters would quit writing what other posters think.  Just a suggestion.  I will write and clarify what I think.  You write and clarify what you think.  Both of us can refrain from saying such and such is and idiot or stupid this or that.

That would HELP.
