First off, if you don't know what OBD II is then you're most likely not using one of these.  OBD stands for 'on board diagnostics' and the II is 2nd generation.  This started back when they first started putting computers in vehicles.  They can perform certain diagnostic tests and give a report of what's happening (if you have the link to connect to them).

I have a mid-range tool but it has a long cord and it's a bit bulky to just carry with me.  When we go on trips I usually do carry it with a few basic tools though.  But these are pretty darned inexpensive and if they do a decent job I'd buy several of these and keep one in every vehicle!

I wish I had one.....  but kind of expensive for the "real" version.

At least you didn't think it was some kind of a 'toy' ;) ;)

I've "played" with them at Mickey D's alot.

There is a huge difference between the OE version and the Code Readers you get at the parts store.....

The new versions are pretty cool.  Plug in a doggle to the port with a blue tooth interface to the laptop on the bench.

No more long wire.

I have one. I use Torque (the free app). It works ok. I have problems with the Bluetooth connection occasionally.

It tells you what's wrong when the "check engine" light in your car comes on.

Do you just use it to run diagnostics or do you leave it hooked up to use like a dynometer?

Usually diagnostics. It can be distracting while driving.

Fritz - what do you have to get to plug in to interface to the APP?

I'm kind of curious on what kind of outputs it can give?
