Updated: A Viking ship is docking in Detroit this weekend!
« Reply #212 on: August 18, 2016, 04:18:47 PM »

The viking ship will be nearby one last time this weekend.  I didn't see any cost for the tour although you may have to pay to get on Belle Isle if you don't have a state park pass already.

I'm guessing they will be accepting donations to cover the cost of the pilot.  I wonder if they still have to pay the $10K for the pilot if they're tied up to the dock?

I wonder how long the lines will be?

The Soo Locks open tonight at midnight for shipping.

The ice breaker Mackinac has already been cleaning out ice on both ends of the locks.

I wonder who you have to know to be a 'guest' on one of these trips?

The man that posted this is from Sarnia so I'm assuming this is a Canadian Coast Guard Cutter.

Breaking ice recently in Thunder Bay.  He notes that in some places the ice was still 4 feet thick.

The Coast Guard swapping out buoys in Saginaw Bay.  I've boated that channel hundreds of times!

There's a shipping 'traffic jam' at The Soo Locks.

Sometimes the Coast Guard is also called for some fire fighting and investigation work!
