They made it to the top of the mitten but now they're pretty much sitting still...

looks like they're ready to pick their way through the straits or maybe they're waiting for an ice breaker to come out and open up a path for them.

Can't imagine much shipping movement with the sub zero temps the past week.

As a side to the shipping,

I've been curious has anyone been to the museums on Great lake shipping?
I was looking to see if I could find a great grandparent who was a cook on the Great Lakes...  and didn't know if they had that type of material.

Heading almost due west at 12.9 knots right behind one of the Bay class ice breakers!

The Andersen appears to be the only large ship that's even been trying to move in the Great Lakes for the last week.  I see a few tugs and a couple of ferrys and there were a couple of freighters in the Detroit and St. Clair rivers that appeared they were heading for their winter layover mooring!

Closing in on Mackinac Island...

then the Mackinac Bridge...

and then a lot of open water and ice across Lake Michigan!!!

Once they get to port and moored I wonder how long it takes them to shut things down so they can head home?

She's west of the bridge - now in Lake Michigan.

Looks like they're making good time, now that they're in deeper water.  Ice might be a little thinner there.

About 120 'as the crow flies' miles to go...  they just may make it by midnight if they can maintain their current speed!

For some reason the Anderson has stopped in Lake Michigan, about 20 or 25 miles west of the bridge.

The Coast Guard icebreaker Katmai Bay is steaming EAST, away from the Straits, at a fast clip.  The Katmai Bay was blazing a path for the Anderson all the way from Sarnia.

Very curious.  I have no idea whats going on, now.  Maybe there's a problem on board the Katmai Bay.

Here's another one...  sometimes one won't be showing the location and the other will.  Must be something to do with refresh rates maybe.

I watched their progress through the straits and under the bridge most of the day yesterday.  Then late in the afternoon I saw the Andersen wasn't moving anymore and the Matmai Bay was heading back east.  We left home about then and when we got home late the Katmai Bay was docked in St. Ignace and the Andersen was sitting right where it was when we left...   I'm wondering if maybe the ice got too thick for the 'Bay' class icebreaker (they're not very big) to handle.  Or maybe another one from over in the Sturgeon Bay area will be coming over for the rest of the escort detail.

I've looked online but can't find any info...  I'm sure we'll eventually hear something.

That was my experience yesterday as well.  I didn't see the Katmai Bay docked in St. Ignace, but that would explain why she didn't make it very far through the night.

Maybe they wanted to stop at the casino for a drink, some dinner and a little gambling?   ;D ;D ;D

The tag on the Katmai Bay is now showing destination as 'home'...

According to this page http://www.uscg.mil/datasheet/140wtgb.asp  'home' is in Sault Ste. Marie and there is a similar breaker, the Mobile Bay which is stationed in Sturgeon Bay which is where the Andersen is heading!

The boat nerd chart shows the Mobile Bay still tied up right in Sturgeon Bay although the tag with it is showing status as 'under way' but speed as 0 knots...   my guess is they're working on getting ready to get going!

The dock they were in is pretty close to the casino so that would make sense!!!

Nothing like a nice warm casino after a few days out on the Great Lakes breaking ice!!!

I haven't been able to figure any rhyme or reason as to why the position shows sometimes and not others...

if these were on the MCRC trucks I'm sure we'd have some kind of a conspiracy theory going though :o :o :o
