Gardening thread... What have you planted this spring...?
« on: May 29, 2015, 10:36:46 PM »

My patch is all in.  As usual I planted rows and rows of potatoes (had a bunch of seed potatoes left which BRD had no issue taking home....  My usual Kennebec light skinned white meat taters and numerous Red Pontiacs that I got from the farm store to replenish my dwindling seed stock.

I put in 6 long rows of Ambrosia sweet corn too.

2 long rows of onion sets, one row of reds, one row of whites.

Planted 13 hills of Blue Lake green beans...and ONE tomato plant.

No zuchini this year, no Brussels Sprouts either.

SMASH came up and got a load of horse poop (we have a huge pile waiting for takers).

How about you?

Here's what I have in so far:

cabbage
leeks
tomato
cucumber
egg plant
sweet corn
green beans
sugar snap peas
red potatoes
peppers - green and jalapeno
onions - white, yellow and green
squash - acorn, summer and zucchini
cantaloupe
pumpkins

I have invited some friends to fill in the voids in the back garden.   Hopefully they will bring some interesting additions.

If I spray before planting, it's usually a herbicide that is incorporated right away.  There really is no set time for that.  In the old days, guys would spray right in front of the field cultivator, with a planter following right behind.  Almost everyone did this before the days of Roundup Ready seeds.

Most of my spraying is done after planting (post-emerge), though.  I don't use many pre-emerge herbicides.  I usually don't have the time.  Plus, post-emerge applications allow me to fine tune the herbicides for whatever weeds I see in the field.

Thanks Livewire.   I been growing organic the way my Dad taught me for years, but with each passing year I am considering using some technology to make it a little easier on the knees.

The only amendment I use in the garden is 46 urea, aged horse poop and possibly a spray or two of Sevin.  I have an applicators license but there is no reason to use pesticides/herbicides on a hobby garden....  I plant my rows 3 feet apart center to center so I can get one of my 3 tillers (usually the Troy-Bilt little one) to 'weed'.  My garden is about a quarter acre in size.

No luck with cukes here and havent had any for a few years now.  They always get wilt and I get tired of chasing my tail with cucumbers.

I only tend to plant what will freeze or what will can for the cellar.  Last year was cabbage year, red and white and thats all in kraut in the cellar now.  Same with the maters last year, CL canned them in spag sauce.

The corn will mostly get blanched, shelled and frozen in zip-loc bags.  Onions get dried, bagged in mesh bags and hung in the cellar along with spuds, same scenario.  The beans will get blanched and frozen

I usually plant cabbage, bell peppers and brussels sprouts in 2 year intervals growning enough to carry us for the next year.  Kraut keeps for decades.  So does spag sauce.  Everything in the freezers gets consumed bi-yearly.

Not a fan of zuchini or egg plant or anything like that.  why grow it if we don't consume it.

I can do spuds every day, beans too.

I made CL a segregated strawberry patch last year, fenced and protected and the strawberry plants are multiplying so we will have to have another patch made this year.  Got huge berries last year, they seem really happy.

I have plants ready to go
Peppers,  Yellow, red, and Giant Marconi (they are great grilled)
Rutgers and Marigold tomato
grape tomato
burpless cukes  (the regular kill me)  burp burp burp
1 bush zuchini

Years ago when kids were home i had a garden 145' x 150'
grew lots of potato's and sweet corn.

I'm waiting for things to green up more, and that damned dark brown helicopter to stop flying before I plant mine.

And I too have a couple of hundred lbs of horse dung from the grandkids horses.  The neighbors will love me for a few days.

I was always told that horse and chicken dung was too "hot" to use on the garden.

My neighbor planted some 4 x 4 post down the property line. Now I have a beautiful cedar fence along one side of my property :-)

Horse poop has to be "aged" about a year, then it's fine.  It basically turns into dirt.  Don't know about chicken poop.

Obviously your neighbor is telling you something.....lol  You get the backside, they get the frontside.  Fences make good neighbors actually.

The basement and some full spectrum grow lights work better.  What they can't see they can't confiscate...

I actually have 3 tillers.  I thought about a rear mount 3 point but I'd be planting acres instead of a garden, thats too much.  I have a Sears front tine for chewing up the patch in the spring and then a rear tine Cub Cadet for getting everything ready to plant and a small Troy-Bilt rear tine for weeding between the rows.

Got the Troy-Bilt out of a dumpster a few years back.  Had to replace the engine and some seals but its a nice little tiller.  Think I'm into it for about 100 bucks.

Gave BRD an Ariens Rocket rear tine last year, don't know if he rebuilt it or not yet....
