Blog about Monroe County History by Kathy Warnes
« on: July 19, 2017, 11:11:38 AM »

From what I can find this gal lives on the other side of the state at this point but must have lived over here when she was younger.  She seems to have a lot of interest and first hand knowledge of the Monroe and Downriver area.

I stumbled onto her blog while looking for some historic info.  I'll work my way through it as I have time.

Interesting blog - I got to the part of the Petersburg Constable being killed by chicken thieves...

I was a former Constable - didn't realize it was that dangerous of a job!

Did you have those big red rotating light sirens mounted on top of the white Lincoln squad car?

Thanks BRD, I enjoy reading about the old days of this locale.

Glad you're enjoying...   I've read some things I never heard before and some more details of things that I have heard before.

I also read that she is working on writing a book about the bootlegging days in Downriver and Monroe.  That should be interesting too.

As soon as I read that I thought about 'Hot Rod Lincoln' by Commander Cody.  Got to wondering if he was still around and I looked and found that today is his birthday!!!  Not sure if a lot of people realize it but his group was formed in Ann Arbor and there are several Michigan connections.

Rum runninghttps://monroemichigan.wordpress.com/2016/12/09/bootlegging-down-the-avenue-de-boozeto-the-monroe-crossroads/ during Prohibition...

sounds like there were plenty of speakeasies and local undercover breweries and distilleries in the area.

This is something I saw in the article so did a quick Google search and found this additional link with lots of details.  This sounds like some of it could have happened right around where we live.
