Is it wrong to order delivery in a snowstorm?
« on: January 30, 2018, 11:41:11 AM »

Here's a philosophical question.

When there's a nasty storm (could just be rain in warmer weather) is it ok to order up a delivery pizza or whatever you can order in your neighborhood?

I'm seeing two trains of thought on this.

1.  If it's too nasty to go out yourself then you shouldn't be asking someone else to go out!

2.  This is part of the reason these 'carry out' drivers are in business...   for their customer's convenience!

Extra points if you comment on tipping 'extra' during a nasty storm!

Here's an article from Mlive on the topic.  They had a poll and it was 'too close to call' at the end!

My thought is along the line that this is part of the reason these drivers are out there.  To bring you or your family a meal at a time you can't or would prefer not to be out on the roads.  In most cases the delivery person will be dressed for the weather at hand and I would hope that their vehicle is in good condition for the weather scenarios they are encountering.

When I was in high school (in Cleveland), I delivered pizza's for a pizza parlor.  Was part of the service and I usually got good tips too.  I still remember my 'pizza keep warm' device.  An inverted plunger suck between the seats with a large 12 volt bulb inside.  The box went on top and it kept the pizza warm on the drive.  I did it winter and summer, rain, shine snow or sleet.  Was fun.  Made pizza pies in the shop and played a lot of pin ball.  Ci-Ci's Pizza on West 98th and Dennison Avenue to be exact.  Once in a while I would get the heel end of the Mozzerllia  cheese log to take home.  I love that stuff.

I don't consider it wrong to order a pie when the weather is bad and you don't want to go out, so long as the tip is commensurate with the effort and weather conditions.

Our favorite is still Jets, the closest one is Tecumseh but they don't deliver over 5 miles each way so we order and pick up ourselves.  I may try Papa Johns on Cabelas Drive.  I get 30% off with my AMAC card.

I say yes. Thats what they are there for.

That would be like not ordering pizza on super bowl sunday because the driver is missing the big game !!

Not my problem

I'd order in a heartbeat, and tip well considering the circumstances.

I think about this ethical dilemma during at least 1 out of 3 snowstorms. I think it depends on one's unique circumstances. Just how bad is the snowstorm? Are you relying on delivery, or you just kinda want delivery? Are there children to feed? If you do order, do you plan to tip the driver really well? How mad would you be if you were the delivery driver and had to deliver in a snowstorm?

Usually I run through a set of questions like this, I do think it is an ethical consideration when we ask people to potentially risk their safety to deliver something we may not really need, but only want.

Great question, I was wondering the same thing last week during the snow storm (p.s. I didn't order anything).

I don't because I'm too cheap to tip the driver.

How many places do you have that actually deliver out that far?

After the pizza place closed in town, the answer is ZERO.

I would say that is a small price to pay for solitude!

You can always go to the Walnut up town (Petersburg) for Taco Tuesday night and wait forever to get waited on....  Service sucks big time (we have been told).
