Detroit student didn't know he was shot in class until he got home
Candice Williams / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- School officials are investigating an incident in which a student was accidentally shot in a Finney High School classroom Wednesday afternoon, but didn't know it until he got home.

The teen that brought the gun to school is being held at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility, Detroit Police said.

A shot from a 22-caliber gun grazed a ninth grader in the thigh during an afternoon science class, said Detroit Public Schools spokesman Steve Wasko.

"We understand that he was shot by a gun that was shot accidentally," he said. "Whether or not the bag dropped or the gun dropped out of the bag we don't know. This was not a premeditated incident."

The teacher heard a noise, but didn't know what it was, Wasko said.  ;)

The student was treated at a hospital and released Wednesday. The teen that had the gun, also a male ninth grade student, was arrested by police later that night. On Thursday, district public safety officers conducted a weapons sweep of the school. No other guns were found.

"Clearly we'll be concerned whenever a weapon is in the building," Wasko said. "The metal detectors are being checked. It was an accident and a very unusual situation at that."

When you have to have metal detectors and security guards its time to MOVE!

When we lived out in Adrian in the 90's and the school brought in security guards, we just looked at each other and quickly decided we were ten minutes late for the door!  We started making plans immediately to go back to Trenton where there is no need for security guards to this day.....

And to think we moved out there because we thought "living in the country" would be good for the kids!

Detroit student didn't know he was shot in class until he got home

I looked, none of my body parts are known as 'class.'

The headline should properly read:
"Detroit student didn't know he was shot while in class until he got returned home.

peace,

We've heard so many school shooting incidents these days. We should pay more attention to the security of schools. And I can't believe that why the metal detectors are not applied in schools. Metal detectors can be seen everywhere in today's society that they are applied in public places where there are a large flow of people. So metal detectors are also needed in schools.

Sounds to me like someone is selling metal detectors :-\ :-\ :-\

Maybe Parents should be making sure they get their kids to school - unarmed.

LOL, yup, some good wit and humor there at a young age.

Who do you blame for your rating of the public school system.......government, a social environment where some kids have parents not interested in their education, uneducated parents, single family parents that have little time to help their kids, or do you just blame the teachers?

Personally I lay the blame squarely on All-of-the-Above, not to mention the cultural marxists who specifically - and successfully - targetted the skoolz for their Early and Often political indoctrination well over a hundred years ago.

Thanks.....good read, I follow some of the rationale.

I would blame all of the above too, except for the teachers.  I think their hands have been tied down so bad with dictated curriculum, then throw on all of the socioeconomic factors and I can't see placing blame on the individual teachers.

Publik skool teechers (and their private/parochial counterparts who accept pilfered federal funding) are the main ingredient in that pot of rotten stew.  Just like cops one can't paint them all as bad in a single stroke but the very systems they work for encourage abuse and (leftist) political indoctrination of the masses of humanity.  Hence they are part of the problem, and solutions to nothing.

OK, then what is your recommended solution?

Not all of humanity's problems have human solutions but for anything to improve the state of education here "government" must first be removed from the enterprise, entirely.

I agree on the no solution on all of humanity's problems, the same applies to the cultural and social ills of this country's inner cities as well.

I've never supported the Feds being involved intimately involved in public schools as I believe for the most part is an unnecessary duplication of what should administered by each State.

I see the public school degradation on the ills of society, be it social or economic.  Children are willing to learn, and in fact love it, but I believe the measurable success of a student depends on the involvement of a parent or parents.  I grew up in a single parent home and not much time or emphasis at all placed on education......and my grades reflected it as well as the amount of hard effort I had to put forward to go back to college and retake fundamental classes.  Now my children had both of us at home and they excelled in school, and are successful adults IMO.

I also think folks look down on the school systems because they see the amount of tax dollars they have to contribute to it.  Schools are too bureaucratic where the bulk of the salary dollars of the system go to administrators and support staff.  The teachers themselves are not getting rich out of the money distribution.
