People will go to places they want to go to - period. Its all about personal preference. If I want to go to a bar, and I smoke, I will take myself off to one that allows me to do so. Same as if I didn't smoke... I would take myself to a place that was smoke free. ( I neither drink or smoke or go to bars but thats beside the point)

Bingo Halls - I used to go play bingo at a school. No more smoking on school property - no more bingo at that school. Attendance dropped way way down. They moved it to a private hall but after paying the rent - they weren't making enough money. No more bingo and no more extra money for the Boosters. Keep the trickle down going and you have no more booster scholarships, uniforms, equipment, blah blah blah - just one example.

There are plenty of stinky things out there that assault me when I go out in public... Perfume is a biggie, smell gets stuck in my nose, on my clothes, in my hair and leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. Its perfectly legal to stench up the air with perfume. Some stores even try to hose you down with it to get you buy it. I totally avoid that department. Oh yeah - makes my eyes water too sometimes. But - enough about me.

There are many things that are bad for us that we indulge in. Almost everything fun or tasty could be potentially fatal. How far should the government step in and when should we be allowed to choose for ourselves?

I think the businesses should just have to claim either a smoking or non-smoking status and let the consumer decide which one to patronize.
I would also suggest that the nonsmoking joints face fines if they claim to be smoke free and allow smoking. Not just by a "smoke nazi" anonymous report. A person would have to swear out a complaint against the smoker and the business owner same as if you were reporting any other crime. This solution leaves the issue of who is going to pay for the cigarette police.... (?)

we have been saying that in this posting since it started lulu but you are so correct!!

one of the reasons are because non smokers cant support a small mom n pop bar...they will not spend enough money so the bar can make a profit!!

in toledo they have these commercials on the radio saying this is the sound of a bar before the smoking ban and this is the sound after the smoking ban, of course the sound is the same as if customers still come in as before...that is as far from the truth as it can be! maybe for a large chain bar or one that mostly sells food...but the small businesses are hurting badly!! i know of one that his friday and sat sales have dropped from over 2000 dollars for both days combined to about 600 to 700 dollars. an american legion is about to close their bar up and possibly close their doors completely due to no one coming in. this is just a couple of places being affected...no one on the radio speaks of this of course!!

another stupid thing is that you can call the smoking nazi hotline to report people smoking but you dont have to give your name!! lol and it has happened of course that people are calling cause they are mad or dont like the place and saying the bar is allowing smoking etc etc..first of all...arent we all allowed to see who are accuser is? its just ridiculous!

the bars in south monroe and lenawee counties are loving all this!!!!!!!

do you want this happening in michigan???

again...forcing a business owner to do things against his will is bad business!

  Do you remember the old saying  " Cutting Your Nose Off Despite Your Face " ? That's exactly what Monroe will be doing if a smoking ban goes into effect. 

  People can see what's happening in Toledo. In some ways that's helping business here in Monroe. For the simple fact that people have been comming up here to Michigan bars and restaraunts where they can smoke and drink. If we put a stop to smoking in bars and restaraunts we loose just that much more business. The gas prices alone have already hurt us. Do we really have to cut our nose off depsite our face ?

Do we really know this, theres been no studies done on the long term effects of inhaling the other gas to my knowledge.

I don't smoke, but I do disagree with the total smoke ban. I do think it should be banned for food serving businesses, but not in bars. Maybe there should be smoke free nights? But someone would complain that the designated night does not suit them. There will always be a complainer no matter what. I love not having to smell smoke when I eat my meal. As a photographer I applaud the smoke free wedding receptions. It takes a long time for my camera bag to stop smelling & I don't care for the smell of Fabreez either. It is a no win situation, but there are now more non-smokers than smokers in todays society.
I would like to say the non-smoker had to deal with the smokers for years, why don't you deal with us for a while now?

I agree that smoking should be banned.  Sorry to say Toledo business is not hurting from this, you can get statistics to say whatever you want.  But talk to the resturaunt owners and managers......they will tell you the same.  Or should I say the ones I frequent anyway. 

Until "air" becomes a un-universal no one has the right to pollute it.  And I resent the people that say it is their right.  When a device is invented to only keep the smoke in a foot by foot area around the individual smoker then puff away.  Until then, well you are infringing on my right to breathe. 
Your smoke travels people.......admit it and move on.

I fail to see why this matters.  I am not a smoker, I avoid going to places that are full of smoke (I don't freak out like some people do the minute they see cigarette smoke) and if my meal is ruined in a restaurant because of smoking or any other reason I will not visit that restaurant again.  I like the fact that a number of restaurants are smoke free on their own.

However, I don't see why my tax dollars should go to pay men with guns (aka the government) to stop restaurant and bar owners from allowing what they want inside of their private property unless they are kidnapping people and forcing them to do thnigs.  I would much rather see my tax dollars go to police and fire protection, maintenance of the road ways and sewer systems, and the other things government has a legitimate responsibility to do.

nadjula?? just what places do you go to in toledo??? as i said in an earlier post...large bars that sell food arent doing too badly...its the mom n pop places that are hurting! i know...i stopped going to them but still keep in touch and still go to bars in toledo that are still smoking!

but the point of it all is...who are you or any government to tell anyone how to run their own business??? thats the point!!!!! until they ban cigarettes etc totally its still legal to smoke! i agree that restaurants could be smoke free...i dont have a problem with that but maybe the owners do! but as far as bars go...well...you know my answer to that.
