So far, I have to say that Aldi's is really a step above Save-a-Lot. We started going there and our favorite things to buy at Aldis' are "Fit and Active" peaches in the can, $1.09 a can and their orange juice is $2.49 a half gallon and I like the Arizona iced tea, flavored for 69 cents. I am sure that other things are also good, but these are our favorites.

We stopped by Aldi's when it opened... it's great if you're having a party and need to stock up on junk food, but I didn't really see much there that was compelling to buy on a weekly basis.

Aldi's has several options for healthier snacks (fit and active), and it's closer to my house. I've only been into save-a-lot when I had one specific item to buy, so I didn't do much browsing. Does save-a-lot have these types of things?

I shopped the Monroe Aldi's this weekend for the first time.

We knocked out our whole list there, and so far, I am pleased with the flavor of the food. My fisrt fear was quality, but we are happy so far.

I will not buy my canned veggies there, nor the fresh fruit or veggies. Ciollino's will get my business first because it is so fresh, and their prices are great. PLUS I like to help out the local private businesses.

I agree with Ciollino's - the place is awesome... but why not Aldi's for canned vegetables???  Do you know of somewhere cheaper?

The Kroger near me has veggies usually for about $.50 a can. To me that is cheap enough.

I tried some of the Aldi's canned veggies a few years ago, and I was less than satisfied. It could be different now, but when it comes to canned veggies, the Kroger brand, or Meijer brand is usually a brand name wrapped with a different label.

When you get down to $.35 a can for beans and peas that's scary unless it is a big brand on sale.

Just because it can have a shelf life of 2 years doesn't mean I want to buy my beans 3 months before they expire  :o

The Aldi’s canned veggies were great and I’ve had a lot bad squeaky no-name brand canned veggies in the past so I’m a reluctant buyer.
Perhaps the great taste is because the store is new and they’re still fresh.

I personally don't see the savings as being worth it for me to shop at either store. For me to buy FOOD products that are "ultra-generic" I need would to save alot more than what I would be saving by shopping either of those stores. I find most of their prices comparable to on sale "real "brands or at least Kroger brand everyday prices.

I tried Aldi's as well as Sav-a Lot a few times over the years and I have always been disappointed with the savings to quality ratio.

When I make my purchases using the, "on sale, coupon combo tactic " I get a much better quality product and many times at a lower price.

For example, I just went to Kroger and bought a few blocks of Kraft cheese on sale 3 for $5.00, ($1.67 each), threw in a coupon for .75 off of 2 ended up paying $1.30 each. At Aldi's Happy Farms brand in on sale for $1.67.  :P

That is just one example of many. ( I won't bore you with my grocery list  :D)  So in my experience it's not worth it to go to Aldi's or Sav-a Lot.

I've gone to Save A Lot a couple of times and Aldi's once. I usually end up going to Kroger or Meijer to finish my list anyways because neither of those stores seem to carry everything I need for just one visit. Also, there's some things that I just won't buy generic and since I am a coupon clipper, I can get my name brand items at Meijer or Kroger for the same price as the generics.

I do agree that shopping smart is the way to go; we just went to the Aldi’s grand opening to use their $5 off coupon for spending $30
Meijer and Kroger works for us.
Although it’s not a healthy food…I’ve just noticed how small the new Hostess cupcakes are now. (They’re starting to look like brownie bites)

LOL@ frenchfry...........Yes I agree!! They are ripping us off every chance they get.  Shrinking the product but not the price. I'm not happy with the new puney size Hostess cupcakes either.  >:(

I didn't really like Aldi's when I went there. I do think Save A Lot is better. I don't do my regular shopping at either place, since they don't have all of the things I normally buy.

I think Aldi's is great for milk, lettuce, great prices on strawberries, and they are always nice and fresh. I tried some of the boneless pork chops, and they were tasty. I also buy the Bags of frozen Tilipia, 3.99, enough for my husband and I for at least three meals. Also good deals on frozen shrimp. My husband loves canned peaches, and he swears by those.
