I marvel at how some mock and harass that which is set about for good, or side with those who mock what is right. I marvel at how some fight for rights to be indecent and rude. But I am glad all this has taken place, for we can see more clearly who people really are; whether they be rude and harassing, or just side with them quietly to be in the clique.

Anyways, I trust in time, after the dust settles, that these new additions to the Terms of Service will work for the good of the whole.

And now it begins.

Any bets on when the first tattletale messages to DanShaw are sent over arguments in the Religion and Politics forums?

HE SAID SOMETHING MEAN ABOUT A RACE BAN HIM
HE MOCKED MY GOD BAN HIM
HE ISN'T SAFE FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTER TO READ BAN HIM

There is no such thing as common sense.

FTR I never complained about anyone...yet! :P

Nothing much has changed. You can crow about your "victory" till the cows come home. Essentially, the rules are the same as they were.

And yes, people will fight for rights to speak freely and without censorship. It's one of the principles of being an AMERICAN CITIZEN.

If I were crowing my victory, I'd say something like: Moves Bishop in front of Black King. "Checkmate."

This wasn't about winning some great game. It was about this site being decent and comfortable for all. These new additions to the Terms of Service will aid in that.

Concerning the principles of America, we can say what we wish in places we are free to say them. And this site is the Administration's property, we abide by their rules. Again, all are free within the confines of the laws of the land, or site.

In America, you can call someone an ingnorant fool in your own home, but do it in a Court Room and you'll get arrested, because there are rules of conduct within certain places; even bars kick out those acting loud and aggressive. If bars have rules of conduct then shouldn't a place that desires to stay community friendly?

Sadly, without rules people will not keep their rude and indecent natures in check. That's why we have hundreds of laws.

New terms of service for MonroeTalks.com were posted today. You can read more about the whys and wherefores at my blog, NewsNotes, at www.blogsmonroe.com/editors

The complete terms of service are at www.monroetalks.com/terms. I've listed the rules for posting, which are just part of the terms of service, here.

•   Please be responsible. Self-moderate, remembering that this is a family Web site. Don’t post content you wouldn’t want your 13-year-old child or your mother to view. That includes profanity, nudity and lewdness.
•   Any content you post on MonroeTalks.com must be your original work, or you must have authorization from the copyright owner. Do not attempt to impersonate another individual.
•   Do not post content that defames or invades the privacy of an individual. Keep your disagreements civil. No harassing or intimidating others. Disagree with another person’s views – don’t attack the person.
•   Keep your ranting to a minimum. Take a deep breath, count to 10.
•   Try to keep your posts on topic as much as possible.
•   Content that promotes racism, bigotry, homophobia, hatred or physical harm to any group or individual will not be tolerated.

On a related topic.
The process of rewriting the terms of service raised a number of issues and questions. I’d like to get together with MonroeTalks.com users to hear your thoughts, answer questions and chat about how to improve the forums.
I’ll buy the coffee if you’ll join me at 9 a.m. Friday, April 11, at Café Classic in downtown Monroe. Names are optional. I just want to hear what folks have to say and give anyone a chance to ask questions.
This isn't just about the terms of service, but about anything we can do to improve the forum experience.
Hope to see you there.
Dan

Good effort Dan.  Thanks.  This seems to be pretty "common sensical", especially in with the unfortunate recent events.

I hope your meeting on Friday morning doesn't preclude too many from showing up.  It's a very nice offer and I hope you get some good feedback.

Whereas, freedom of speech and freedom of the press are fundamental human rights, and free use of the Internet is protected in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees freedom to “receive and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers”, and
Whereas, the rapid provision of full and uncensored information through the Internet has become a major industry in the United States, and one of its major exports, and
Whereas, political censorship of the Internet degrades the quality of that service and ultimately threatens the integrity and viability of the industry itself, both in the United States and abroad, and
Whereas, some authoritarian foreign governments such as the Governments of Belarus, Burma, China, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam block, restrict, and monitor the information their citizens attempt to obtain, and
Whereas, technology companies in the United States such as Google, that operate in countries controlled by authoritarian governments have an obligation to comply with the principles of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, and
Whereas, technology companies in the United States have failed to develop adequate standards by which they can conduct business with authoritarian governments while protecting human rights to freedom of speech and freedom of expression,
Therefore, be it resolved, that shareholders request that management institute policies to help protect freedom of access to the Internet which would include the following minimum standards:
1) Data that can identify individual users should not be hosted in Internet restricting countries, where political speech can be treated as a crime by the legal system.
2) The company will not engage in pro-active censorship.
3) The company will use all legal means to resist demands for censorship. The company will only comply with such demands if required to do so through legally binding procedures.
4) Users will be clearly informed when the company has acceded to legally binding government requests to filter or otherwise censor content that the user is trying to access. 5) Users should be informed about the company’s data retention practices, and the ways in which their data is shared with third parties.
6) The company will document all cases where legally-binding censorship requests have been complied with, and that information will be publicly available.

Censorship on here has gone beyond what is normally acceptable but what recourse do we have?
Can we boot the editors?

There is certainly no violation of law here, if anything, such rules uphold and gain strength by the laws of this country. Maybe some will go to their local bar and cry out, saying, "I DEMAND the RIGHT to act like a loud raving fool here! I have freedom of speech to say what I will, where I will!" They'll be escorted out.

...you are a waste of human flesh!
I won't report your harassment violation. I'll leave it as a testimony of your rude aggressions.
