Speaking of birdwatching....does anyone have any good advice about keeping neighborhood cats away from your birdies?  In a dramatic scene, a cat got a peaceful and sweet but slow mourning dove outside our window this morning.  I banged on the window and yelled when I saw it about to happen but it was too late.

Unfortunately, that's just nature and the natural food chain.  ( :( yuk)

I just added some information to my blog on attracting birds to our backyards.

I’d like to tar & feather the people that feed the birds.

What goes in must come out and they usually manage to target my vehicles.

Birds are perfectly capable of feeding themselves without some nut out there tossing bread at ‘em.

Aw, come on FF.  You like birdies, don't you?  Not even the cute little yellow or red ones?  They make my day.

I do agree with you that they are capable of feeding themselves.  That's why we try to "attract" them to our yards.  They eat bugs too.

Bird crap is an issue.  Then there's bird flu.  I think it's worth the risk.

belladonna, your yard sounds heavenly.  What a variety!  Growing sunflowers is a good idea.  I need to start planting.

I love birdwatching and bird feeding, and this post made me think of a wonderful little poem I learned in 4th grade about feeding birds:

Feeding the Bird~ Annonymous

The sun was shining brightly
and I could hardly wait.

To gaze outside my window
and ponder my estate.

The wind was blowing briskly
the flowers, they did sway.

Everything was enchanting on this fine spring day.

I harkened to a little bird
with a little yellow bill.

I harkened him to come and sit
upon my window sill.

I fed him bread and cake crumbs
I watched him as he fed.

And closing the window quietly
I smashed his little head!

peace

It is true that birds are capable of feeding themselves.  But the fact is that they need places to do that. Every day more habitat is destroyed for all animals.

I take great joy in helping animals survive and flourish. This is their home too.

Fry: maybe it's time to quit parking under a tree. ;)

I avoid trees and powerlines but still get bombed.

Perhaps it’s karma for booting two small owls out of a tree that I had to cut down.

The large load droppings last year were purple so we ripped out our fruit bearing grapevines but we can’t figure out how to stop the old folks from tossing the bread at the flying rats yet.

Any birdwatchers out there?

I'm not so hardcore that I have a bird book that I mark the dates in yet, but kids have such sharp eyes, I'm trying to learn more so when they say "What kind of bird is that Mommy?"  I don't have to say "Um, a red one!"

MomEm

There is a local bird club in town that meets once a month at the college. They travel all over the country and sometimes to other countries to watch birds.  I heard there are two local Eagle nests this year. The eagles are making a good come back and are seen quite often around Monroe. They look like an airplane when flying because they hold their wings perfectly flat. They call them the flying plank, because their wings are straight as a board when soaring around.

Here's their web site:   http://www.esba-monroe.org/

Get yourself a "Petersons field guide" the best book for identifying birds.
