Some good questions have been asked on this thread. They motivated me to clarify again, with some new information, how we make decisions about moderating MonroeTalks.com.
You can find my thoughts on the News Notes blog:

For the record, we take seriously our responsibility as the only newspaper and news Web site in town to protect everyone's access to free speech. That's why we print virtually every letter to the editor we receive, and that's why we created MonroeTalks.com - to provide a forum for community discussion.
But that doesn't mean we don't have rules - guidelines for letters to the editor and Terms of Service for MonroeTalks. If you don't like the rules, let us know. We're constantly reviewing them.
For example, we're now considering whether to add a new rule to the Terms of Service banning multiple accounts from the same IP address. As many users have noticed, there have been some flagrant abuses in recent days.
We didn't ban them from the beginning - as many Web sites do - because we saw little harm in someone having a split personality - more than one personages on MonroeTalks.com. But using multiple accounts to gang up on someone doesn't seem right.
What do you think?
