10. The Wolverines don't like to be outdone by Notre Dame in any way, shape, or form. If the Irish are going to give up 33 points on opening day, then Michigan just had to do them one better.

8. The Mountaineers were well-prepared to take on the big boys, what with playing against I-AA powerhouses like Wofford, Gardner-Webb, and Furman all these years.
7. Lloyd Carr spent the whole week pondering what the heck a "Football Championship Subdivision" is, rather than focusing on how to stop the quarterback draw.
6. Mountaineers' coach Jerry Moore kidnapped Michigan's entire team earlier in the week and replaced them with the Detroit Lions.
5. The Wolverines didn't really want the pressure of being labeled "national championship contenders" hanging over their heads all season, so they decided to nip that distraction in the bud right off the bat.
4. Michigan's booster club just can't seem to buy as many good athletes as they did in the good ol' Ed Martin days.
3. Appalachian State players were extra super-duper fired up after airport security refused to let them bring their squirrel-huntin' rifles on the plane.
2. Michigan's entire defense was up all night Friday watching reruns of E! True Hollywood Story: Jessica Simpson and the World Poker Tour.
And the top reason why U-M lost to the Mountaineers:
1. Since the game was available only on the Big Ten Network, the Wolverines just didn't figure anybody would notice.
