Fibomyalgia Fact or Fiction
« on: September 17, 2008, 09:07:39 AM »

(This recently was posted in the just ask category... but now that we have a health)
I just recently found out that I my have Fibromyalgia, its hereditary. My Aunt has it and so do a few of my other relatives.....
I've been trying foe years to find out why I have such wide spread pain. (I had back surgery in 97) I knew I had nerve damage...
I'm not originally from Monroe area and I swear these doctors hear don't care what "really" wrong with you they just want to fix the surface problem, slap pill on it and call it a day.
I've been trying to find an answer for so long I'm starting to question myself. I suppose when you wait so long for an answer and you finally get one... its to hard to believe.
But, I've notice that its only like a 20 some year old acknowledgment on the decease and some docs still think its a "myth".
So is it fact or fiction.
I know I'm in pain, but When you deal with something for so long and people telling you the your just dramatic or a hypochondriac.... you start to question yourself...

I would like to know about it myself, not familiar with what it is and what it really effects...Is it like arthritis, does it effect the joints...?

Yes, symptoms are very similar to arthritis PLUS with my mother she seems to run out of energy fast. It makes me very sad as she was just a bundle of energy now at 59 tired all the time.  She says she gets very achey (sp?) and just feels like she has the flu minus nausea.

Definition:
You hurt all over, and you frequently feel exhausted. Even after numerous tests, your doctor can't find anything specifically wrong with you. If this sounds familiar, you may have fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points — places on your body where slight pressure causes pain. Fibromyalgia is more common in women than in men. Previously, fibromyalgia was known by other names such as fibrositis, chronic muscle pain syndrome, psychogenic rheumatism and tension myalgias.

Although the intensity of your symptoms may vary, they'll probably never disappear completely. It may be reassuring to know, however, that fibromyalgia isn't progressive or life-threatening. Treatments and self-care steps can improve fibromyalgia symptoms and your general health.
I got the def. from this site......

Once I found it ran in my family I looked all over the net... this is another useful site:

I loose energy fast as well.... when I posted this in the just ask some one that has FM posted this... maybe this will help anyone that is looking for the same answers as me.....
post from a Monroe Talker:
do a variety of things for it.......I take Flax Seed Oil capsules and Fish Oil capsules which help A LOT and also have very good properties for many other things such as your heart and skin.

I take 2 to 3 L-Lysine tablets a day for the fatiuge.....must be L-Lysine and not just Lysine!  The CDC told me years ago that it helps SOME people with the fatigue and for me, it really does!  I also have the Chronic version of Epstein-Barr virus (mono) so it really helps there too........

I take One-A-Day vitamins "All Day Energy" pills every morning which really helps as it contains guarana....a natural herb that gives you energy.

While I do not have the condition, however, my mother-in-law does. She has taken Lyrica. She said it helps a lot.

My mom has this condition.... along with many others... and she just started taking Lyrica. She said that it helps to ease the pain, but doesn't take it completely away.

She's always in some kind of pain because of it.

My best friend has probably the worst case of fibro I have ever known of.  She swears by Dr. Miller. She said he is the only one she has found that at least has some understanding of the disease.

Best wishes to you, I understand what you are going through, I have been through it with my best friend.

I have also heard that fish oil pills can help.  It has been said that fish oil actually helps lubricate the joints, making them feel better.  It does make sense, from a mechanical viewpoint.  I have heard that some people swear by WD-40, sprayed on their joints, and rubbed in with your hands.  I am very serious - I'm not trying to make fun of this.  One of the primary ingredients in WD-40 is fish oil - maybe it can soak into the skin enough to help the joints - I don't know.

Has anybody else heard this?  Anybody tried it?

One night I finally got the courage to ask my mother why God had changed, why He was so angry with His children. “I don’t know,” she said as she tucked the covers around me. “I guess He just got tired of all the bullshlt.”

I have heard of WD-40 for arthritis, my aunt swears by it, but as far as for fibro it won't help.  As much as the joints ache, there is nothing "physically" wrong with the joints, they just hurt.
I do have arthritis as well, and I take glucosamine/chondroiton with hyaluronic acid that seems to be helping with that pain because it helps lubricate the joints.

I was diagnosed with fibro over 3 years ago.  And as much as I was relieved to have a diagnosis for my allover pain, fatigue and other things...I was disheartened as well because a lot of doctors still don't believe in it, or know relatively nothing about the illness.

I have tried Lyrica, it helped to ease the pain, but not take it away completely, and I would really rather try a natural remedy than another stupid drug that the main side effect is weight gain.

My heart goes out to those that suffer from this disease, and their families, but I was excited to see this post because through mediums such as this others can find solace that they are not alone, and get the support needed.  Not to mention all of the advice, finding out what works, what doesn't and so on.  So thank you  :)

I have fibro and so does my husband.  I take Neurontin.  Tried Lyrica but it didn't work.  Neurontin helps some but not enough.  Dr Chiu in Temperance is another good doctor that treats for fibro.  He's at the Family Medical Center in Temperance.  Good luck

I have heard of this too...

have not tried it though...

I hear and read a lot of problems about inhaling petroleum distallate products (including just gasoline)...  not sure if the "short term gain" would be worth the "long term problems" :( :( :(

Yes, live, I've heard positive comments about everything you've mentioned.
