The flight was arriving at Detroit's Metropolitan Airport when the incident took place.

A number of passengers received minor injuries, including the person responsible for the incident.

The suspect, who suffered second-degree burns, reportedly told federal investigators that he was directed by al Qaeda.

President Obama, who is on holiday with his family in Hawaii, has been briefed on the incident.

Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliott said the suspect was subdued immediately.

Delta Flight 253 was carrying 278 passengers from Amsterdam



Personally, I think this is another disturbed person.. Like the lady that attacked the Pope Today... I don't think Al Quida would have just one person... Their MO is usually more than one attack at the same time in different area's... But again.. This went from someone setting off fireworks on a plane... To an actual terrorist attempt within 20 minutes...

I don't know.  This sounds like the real deal.

One thing I do know - the news media was woefully unprepared to cover this on Christmas Day.  There are very few good sources of info. on this right now.  The Detroit Free Press still seems to be kicking everyone's ***.

How many other stories are being buried right now just because it's Christmas?

My son is in India, and will becoming through Amsterdam when he comes back. I'm glad he wasn't on this plane.

A lot of the routine news and feature sources are unavailable / out of town during holidays. So the only tasks for holiday news teams are breaking news and any details that HAVE to be done every day regardless of what is going on.

That's why smaller news staffs than usual are scheduled on those days, and a newsroom of any size may need time to bring in the "on call" team in case of major breaking news.

How do you know this Blue?  He may have been searched, he may not have.. They may have searched a 70 year old.. They may not have..

You just like to throw out conjecture because your too lazy to find substance.. oh excuse me "appear" to be too lazy..

As I said, I think this is one loony.. he may be Islamic, he may not be.. WE DON'T KNOW!

Hey chicky,, i did do some research...I ask my friend who still flies 3 or 4 times a month.  He reports it's the same old stuff when we both flew that much.  The people they pull out and check are the ones least likely to cause a problem.  I rarely would see security pull a person of mideast origin out for special clearance.  I saw it happen but not much and my friend says it's still the same approach.  My friend gets checked at least once a month and he even has special frequent flier credentials that is suppose to get him around security checks.  And further I just read that the guy was on a federal watch list even though he was not on a "no-fly list."   Those characters should be searched every time they board a plane.

How come Nigerians with "explosive powder" strapped to their legs can get through "security" but little old white ladies with blue hair on their heads and Depends wrapped around their backsides are getting strip-searched to get through the same checkpoints?  Hmm. . .

If I recall, the last time I had a connection in Amsterdam I did not have to go back through security screening.  I believe the same holds true on connections in the US as well.
