I'm not sure if Gettlefinger knows who exactly he's dealing with. The UAW leadership knows GM and Ford well but not Cerberus Capital. In as much as Chrysler is privately owned now and especially by a group of private investors, they could actually tell Gettlefinger and the UAW to go fly a kite and then systematically sell off the assets of the company which would put a big number of autoworkers on the street and deal another blow to Michigan as well as it's tax base.
I was surprised that the UAW didn't negotiate with Fords after GM, leaving Chrysler for last. It's interesting in as much as Chrysler hourly workers are the highest paid of the old big 3 and Chrysler is the lowest, volume wise of them.
According to automotive experts, the strike will last longer than the GM strike simply because both sides have no track record as to what the other side's want or actual needs are.
I guess we'll all just have to sit back and hopefully Cerberus Capital don't pull the plug and close the doors.
I keep looking for GM, Fords and Chrysler to become non-union employers in the near future. Maybe the State of Michigan should go that route too.
Even non-union workers have a lot to owe the unions because if it weren't for collective bargaining and negotiated benefits as well as wages, non union workers would all be working for minimum wage with no fringes. However, in this new global economy the unions are quickly outliving their usefulness.
